Why Golfers Travel — And Why Myrtle Beach Keeps Winning

For years, destinations across America have wrestled with one question: What motivates golfers to travel?

A recently completed national survey put the question to group leaders, and their answers went a long way towards explaining Myrtle Beach’s enduring popularity.

When asked what motivates them to travel, here is how folks like you responded:

Play a course I haven’t played before
At the top of the list of reasons to take a trip is the opportunity to play a new golf course, and Myrtle Beach, despite not having opened a new course in nearly 20 years, shines in this department. With nearly 90 courses located along the Grand Strand, you can take a four-night, four-round trip for 20 years, and never play the same course twice.

What players like almost as much as one new course is the opportunity to play different layouts every day. Ranging from the lowcountry beauty of Willbrook (pictured right) to the pine tree-lined fairways of Brunswick County, N.C., the Grand Strand offers varied experiences that golfers love.

Getaway with friends
Sometimes the reason for a trip is simple: time with friends. Truth is you can have a good time just about anywhere, but in a destination with nearly 2,000 restaurants, ranging from casual beach bars to fine dining establishments, it’s even easier. Whether you enjoy the casual charm of Pawleys Island, the buzz of Myrtle Beach, or a combination of the two along the North Strand, there are few better places to escape with buddies.

Return to a destination I love to visit
The survey revealed something else that resonates deeply along the Grand Strand: familiarity. Many golfers fall in love with a place and return year after year. In Myrtle Beach, repeat visitors are the backbone of the destination’s success. For some, the annual trip is a tradition. The same month. The same group. That kind of loyalty isn’t accidental. It’s earned over time.

While golfers relish the opportunity to play new courses, many of you showed a willingness to return to a destination to play a layout you are particularly fond of. With courses such as Grande Dunes, Caledonia, King’s North, TPC Myrtle Beach, Tidewater, Pawleys Plantation and True Blue, among many others, Myrtle Beach is home to many layouts that could bring players back.

Golf trips are about more than birdies and bogeys. They’re about discovery and tradition, challenge and camaraderie. They’re about playing somewhere new — and sometimes returning somewhere that feels like home.

In that balance between new and familiar, Myrtle Beach continues to find its edge.
