Sandpiper Bay

Located in beautiful Sunset Beach, NC, Sandpiper Bay Golf and Country Club offers an exceptional golf experience at an affordable price. These award-winning courses are acknowledged for course maintenance, pace of play and overall experience. Golf Digest gives it 4 stars in its “Places to Play” guide, the Myrtle Beach Area Golf Course Owners Association honored Sandpiper Bay as its “2010 Golf Course of the Year”, and the United States Commerce Association named it the “Best of Sunset Beach” (2008-2009).

The Bay nine has one of most talked-about holes of the three courses: No. 8, a 397-yard par 4 that demands a tee shot to carry over 250 yards of low shrub to a narrow landing area. The 150-yard approach shot can be exhilarating with water guarding the right side of a narrow green. Another memorable hole includes No. 3 on the Sand nine, a 354-yard par 4 that can be a risk/reward hole for many. The tee shot has to be carried over water to another narrow landing area, and if executed correctly, can be rewarded with a 60-yard approach shot into the green.

We played Sandpiper Bay as our first course of a three round weekend, so we were looking for a course in good shape and not too difficult. Sandpiper Bay delivered and we had an enjoyable round. The course is straightforward, in good condition, and quite playable. Our round started about 30 minutes after our tee time because the starter was having difficulty getting a large group of about 10 foursomes out before us. In our view the course staff should have been prepared for that. Worse, the starter also kind of lost track of us after the delay started. I checked back with him for our "revised" tee time and he was surprised to see me! "You have not teed off yet?" A strange comment from a starter. The course also did not have any water on it. which surprised and disappointed us. Still a good time for us, but some operational things to work on by the crew at Sandpiper Bay.

My wife and I enjoyed the course - we played the Piper & Bay 9’s - varied holes with some unique challenges. Greens rolled well. Would play again.

Sand and Piper are really awful, not having been overseeded and all the fairways and tee boxes are yellow and unplayable. Bay is a better deal but fairways are thin and fortunetely, the greens are alright. Would not spend money on that course which used to be our favorite since there are so many beautiful golf courses in the region. Unfortunately, this course is removed from our list for a long, long time.

A straightforward golf course, what you see is what you get with wonderful smooth fast greens if that is to your liking. There are definite opportunities to score on this course.

First time playing this course and I'll be back. Fairways, greens and rough are really in great shape. Sand is also. The greens were some of the best I've played this for what will be a 4 month visit. They are fast but true. Took some getting used to re the speed. Friendly from the time you drive up. Nice place. There is a fair amount of water but it is fair.

The course is in really good shape, although the bunkers lack sand. The greens are smooth and quick. The fairways are fairly lush for this time of year. There is some wetness in the front of the greens, so bump and run shots are difficult in general

We enjoyed the whole course. It was in great shape for fall golfing. The people were all very friendly. The clubhouse was nice. We will play the course again on our next visit but hope the weather is better than 44 degrees and windy when we finish at 2 PM so we can enjoy it more.

While not a long course it is very fun to play. The greens were in excellent shape and rolled true. The bunkers on the other hand were in poor shape and we're mainly dirt and mud. Also the starter did not do a great job of keeping you informed and after 9 we had a three group back up on our tenth tee. That is poor time management of the course.

Played on 9/11/12. They should be ashamed. If you tout your sand traps in your review they should be playable. All traps on the Bay 9 had standing water and a sewer gas smell. Are next nine Sand wasn't much better. The pro shop employee had the worst attitude of any in the nine years of playing in Myrtle I have encountered. The only positive thing I can say about course are the older gentlemen who marshalled. Avoid this course.

Myrtle Beach Area Golf Course Owners Association chose this as course of the year 2011 for a reason. Sandpiper Bay is a hidden gem.

Played Sandpiper Bay and as always the greens were in great shape. The fairways were in really good shape considering the hot, dry summer. The staff was very friendly.

My group traveled from Michigan for a week of golf in the Myrtle Beach area. I can say with complete confidence that this was not only the worst golf experience of the trip, but also of my entire life.
First, the staff at the club (and maybe also the owner of the club if the tone is being set from the top) need to take a few business classes and learn how to run a successful golf course. When you are a golf course in a resort-focused area like Myrtle Beach, it's all about building customer loyalty and treating your customers with class and respect. The staff at this club are clueless about this.
Let me take you through our day at the course from the very beginning. My father, two friends, and I all played together on Thursday 7/21. Upon arriving at the course, we were immediately scolded by the cart staff and starter for attempting to share one bag of clubs on one cart. My father and I are both left-handed, and in order to save money on shipping golf clubs on our airline (this can cost $70-$100 total), we decided to pack an extra putter and wedges and share the rest of the clubs. We played at several courses prior to playing Sandpiper, and none of the other courses had an issue with this. This includes top-notch courses like Founders Club, which I would highly recommend. Sandpiper proceeded to charge us $20 for a rental bag that we told them we wouldn't use and didn't need. This was completely ridiculous and unnecessary, as my father and I are both single-digit handicaps who have played in several tournaments. My point is that it was obvious the course wasn't dealing with hacks. All Sandpiper said was that this was their course policy.
Let's move on to the obnoxious group of starters that work at Sandpiper. Our tee time was 9:09 a.m. that morning. At 8:51 a.m., we attempted to go their golf range to warm up for 10 minutes before we proceeded to the first tee. The starter scolded us for attempting to do this, and said that we didn't have enough time to go to the range and needed to go to the first tee 18 minutes ahead of our scheduled tee time. Needless to say, we proceeded to the first tee only to see 2 twosomes and one foursome backed up on the first tee ahead of us.
Thirdly, let's move on to the rangers/marshalls on the course. On the third tee, we asked the starter why the two separate twosomes that were playing ahead of us were not paired together. Again they quoted course policy and said that they would not ask two twosomes play together in order to improve the pace of play, if those twosome requested to not be paired with a different twosome. Maybe they should research USGA rules and note the section that talks about pace of play and adjust their course policy to be consistent with that.
And lastly, let's talk course conditioning. It was simply terrible. The tees, fairways, and rough were all burned to the point where they was brown. The greens were green, but were slow and shaggy. For a course that claims to be a semi-private country club, I would have expected much better conditioning.
In conclusion, I'm really not sure how this course was voted Myrtle Beach Golf Course of the Year in 2010. It's impossible for the course to be objectively named to such a high honor. Trust me - as a person who goes on 2 golf trips a year, DO NOT visit Sandpiper Bay. It was the worst golf experience of my life.

This course does not get the press, but the staff try hard to make it a good golf experience. The 3 9s are fairly equal and always in great shape. For years the course was a well-kept secret, but the news is getting out!
