Our Picks: The 3 Hardest Golf Courses in Myrtle Beach

Myrtle Beach offers more than 80 golf courses, each with its own personality and level of challenge. Difficulty is always subjective — it depends on your game, the conditions, and even the weather that day.

That said, based on back-tee yardage, course rating, slope, and overall playing demands, these are our picks for the three hardest golf courses on the Grand Strand, counting down from three to one.

#3 Founders Club
7,007 yards | Course Rating: 74.2 | Slope: 142

In our opinion, Founders Club is one of the most deceptively difficult courses along the South Strand.Founders Club 12th

At 7,007 yards from the back tees with a 74.2 rating and 142 slope, it presents a balanced but demanding test. The challenge here isn’t overwhelming length — it’s positioning and the noticeable elevation changes that influence both club selection and approach angles.

The layout rewards players who think their way around the course. Landing areas are framed by native waste bunkers, and approach shots often require precise distance control into subtly contoured greens. Being on the wrong side of the fairway can quickly turn a routine approach into a defensive play.

Founders doesn’t overpower you. It challenges your discipline — and in our opinion, that’s what makes it tough. (Founders Club 12th pictured right)

#2 Pawleys Plantation Golf Club
7,008 yards | Course Rating: 74.1 | Slope: 144

In our opinion, Pawleys Plantation raises the level of difficulty due to its strategic demands and coastal exposure.

From the back tees, it measures 7,008 yards with a 74.1 rating and 144 slope. While similar in yardage to Founders Club, Pawleys introduces more volatility, particularly in how it forces players to commit to specific angles off the tee.

Designed by Jack Nicklaus, the course emphasizes preferred sides of fairways, elevated greens, and thoughtful risk-reward decisions. The finishing stretch along the marsh is especially demanding, where wind and visuals can quickly influence club selection and confidence.

We believe Pawleys tests decision-making as much as execution, which is why it takes the number two spot. (Pawleys Plantation Golf Club 17th top photo)

#1 Prestwick Country Club
7,086 yards | Course Rating: 75.3 | Slope: 150

In our opinion, Prestwick Country Club is the toughest overall test in Myrtle Beach from the back tees.Prestwick Country Club 14th

At 7,086 yards with a 75.3 course rating and a 150 slope, the numbers alone signal an elite level of difficulty. But what truly separates Prestwick isn’t just yardage — it’s the severity of the greens and the penalty for missing them.

Designed by Pete and P.B. Dye, Prestwick demands precise ball striking from start to finish. The greens are firm, contoured, and often elevated, placing a premium on distance control and trajectory. Miss in the wrong section and two-putting becomes a challenge. Miss the green entirely and the difficulty escalates quickly.

Getting up and down at Prestwick is rarely straightforward. Tight surrounds, strategic bunkering, and closely mown runoff areas force players to execute delicate recovery shots under pressure. There are very few easy chips, and short-sided misses can lead to bogey or worse in a hurry.

In our view, that combination — demanding tee shots, exacting iron play, severe greens, and difficult recoveries — creates sustained pressure over 18 holes. There simply aren’t many opportunities to relax. (Prestwick Country Club 14th pictured right)

Final Thoughts

Difficulty will always vary depending on the player. But based on yardage, rating, slope, and overall architectural challenge, these three courses stand out to us as the toughest from the back tees.

Founders Club – disciplined and positional
Pawleys Plantation Golf Club – strategic and wind-influenced
Prestwick Country Club – severe greens, difficult recoveries, and constant pressure

For golfers looking to truly test their game in Myrtle Beach, these are the layouts that, in our opinion, provide the stiffest examination. The jury is still deliberating, but the newly redesigned King’s North might soon top this list. We want a few more rounds on it before making the final call, but it’s heavily leaning toward earning a spot.
