Myrtle Beach Golf Courses Escape Hurricane Idalia’s Wrath, Immediately Reopen

The remnants of Hurricane Idalia quickly blew through the Myrtle Beach area, bringing nearly 5 inches of rain, tropical storm force winds, and fortunately, no substantial damage.

Less than 24 hours after the storm exited America’s most popular golf destination, area courses had reopened, ready to welcome players for an idyllic Labor Day weekend when sunny skies, low humidity and temperatures in the low 80s are in the forecast.

Golf courses quickly repaired any washed-out bunkers and removed small debris, but Grand Strand courses were certainly fortunate. With the fall season nearly upon, golfers can expect to find pristine conditions, especially on Founders Group International’s family of 21 courses.

FGI has made reinvesting in its golf courses a priority, undertaking major renovation projects at layouts such as Grande Dunes Resort Course, TPC Myrtle Beach, Pine Lakes Country Club, the Palmetto Course at Myrtlewood, and River Hills Golf Club, among many others. At the heart of FGI’s renovation projects have been the installation of Concrete Capillary Concrete Bunker Liners, allowing sand traps to withstand heavy rain and continue to deliver the type of experience players have come to expect.

Those projects paid dividends in the aftermath of Idalia, as courses quickly reopened with little sign that a tropical storm had just passed through.

Speaking of renovations, Pawleys Plantation Golf Club is currently undergoing a major greens, bunkers and clubhouse restoration project, and the Jack Nicklaus design also avoided any damage. Pawleys remains on track for an October reopening as players are clamoring to return to a layout that features six back nine holes that bring a tidal marsh into play.

While the Myrtle Beach golf community is grateful to have escaped Idalia unscathed, the area’s thoughts are with our friends in Florida and other communities that bore the brunt of the category 3 hurricane’s wind and rain.
