Mother’s Day is nearly upon us and there is no better way to say “I love you” to the golf loving mom in your life than a morning on the course.
Myrtle Beach has a surplus of female friendly golf courses and if you want to celebrate your mother with a round of golf, here are five of the area’s best options.
● With its lowcountry beauty and dearth of long, forced carries, Willbrook Plantation (top photo) has long been a favorite of female (and male!) golfers. Golf Digest once ranked the Dan Maples design among “America’s Top 50 Courses for Women,” highlighting the layout’s appeal.
● Litchfield Country Club, Willbrook’s neighbor, is another course mom will love. Playing 5,252 yards from the red tees, the Willard Byrd layout places an emphasis on precision, as opposed to raw power. Litchfield’s staff is among the beach’s most attentive and the property is meticulously maintained, adding to the experience at Pawleys Island’s first golf course.
● Caledonia. Does this one need any explanation? The Redhead tees play 4,957 yards, making the effective distance longer than it might initially appear on the par 70, but a round at Caledonia (pictured right) followed by lunch on the clubhouse porch is an ideal day for you and your mother. The Mike Strantz design, playing through a stunning piece of lowcountry property that features soaring live oak trees, the Waccamaw Neck and beautiful landscape, is part golf course, part botanical garden.
● Mom will love the West Course at Myrtle Beach National for the same reason dad does – she will have a chance to score. There is little trouble in the form of water, the greens are open off the tee, and the staff is among the area’s best. For longer hitters, the 4,818-yard red tees might be a little short, but you are going there to score.
● On the north end, Sandpiper Bay, a 27-hole facility, is a semi-private club that delivers a player-friendly experience from the bag drop through the 19th hole. Home to the Sand, Piper and Bay nines, the Dan Maples design offers generous fairways and treats guests as if they were members.
If you want to take mom to the course this Mother’s Day, these five courses are a great place to start.
