Among a field of 94 players – aspiring young pros, Korn Ferry Tour regulars, and veterans chasing one more opportunity – it was a dreamer who stole the show at the Monday Qualifier for the PGA Tour’s Myrtle Beach Classic.
Connar Doyal, a 26-year-old mid-amateur who never played college golf, fired a blistering 7-under 65 at TPC Myrtle Beach, tying for the low round of the day and securing one of four spots in the field set aside for qualifiers.
Doyal, who works as a caddie at Kiawah Island’s Ocean Course, carded six birdies and an eagle on a sun-splashed day at TPC Myrtle Beach.
The Charleston native’s path to this moment has been anything but traditional.
A member of a state championship team as a high school junior, Doyal burned out on the game and didn’t play in college, according to a Global Golf Post story. Instead, he enrolled at Auburn as an engineering major, where golf took a backseat before the COVID-19 pandemic changed everything.
When classes moved online, Doyal found his way back to the course. A 37th-place finish at the Alabama State Amateur reignited his competitive fire.
Still searching for direction after college, he left a consulting job in Atlanta to become a caddie at Kiawah, a career change that gave him time to practice.
Since then, Doyal has quietly built an impressive resume, winning the South Carolina Mid-Amateur, capturing the Terra Cotta Invitational, and advancing to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Mid-Am.
Now, he’ll get his chance on golf’s biggest stage.
Doyal will be joined in the Myrtle Beach Classic field by Petr Hruby, who also posted a 65. Thomas Rosenmueller, a Korn Ferry Tour winner, and Nathan Petronzio each shot 66 and advanced through a four-man playoff to claim the final two qualifying spots.
The third annual Myrtle Beach Classic will be played May 7-10 at Dunes Golf & Beach Club.
