Dustin Johnson World Junior in Myrtle Beach Features Dramatic Finish

After posting an opening-round 86, the last thing on Delaney Shah’s mind entering Monday’s final round of the Dustin Johnson World Junior Golf Championship was winning the golf tournament.

Even after rebounding strongly with a 12-stroke improvement in Sunday’s second round, the North Potomac, Maryland high school senior was more focused on finishing strong regardless of where the final result took her. Yet Shah’s final-round 72 (the best of the tournament in the girls’ division) erased a nine-stroke deficit and led her to an improbable two-stroke victory Monday at TPC Myrtle Beach over runner-up Zhu Wenqui of China.

Shah attributed her first-round struggles to her limited time on the putting green in recent months. Snow in her hometown had allowed her to putt on grass only three times since the holiday season, and it showed on Saturday. Shah put in extra work at TPC Myrtle Beach’s practice green prior to Round 2, and the effort produced immediate dividends as she responded with a 2-over 74 in blustery conditions.

That momentum carried over to the final round, as Shah was able to counter four bogeys with four birdies on her way to an even-par score of 72 and the championship trophy.

Shah looks to this victory as a springboard to collegiate golf, where she will be competing at the University of Louisville.

On the boys’ side, Blake Taylor of Atkinson, North Carolina won the boys’ championship with a four-shot victory over second-place finisher Jamie Wilson of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina.

The Dustin Johnson World Junior Golf Championship features an international field of boys and girls competitors ages 13 to 18.  Supported by one of the PGA Tour’s biggest stars, the competition give participants a PGA Tour-like experience along with the chance to test their games against premier golfers from around the globe.
