Myrtle Beach’s South Strand, also known as the Hammock Coast, is renowned for its golf, particularly the Pawleys Island trio of Caledonia Golf & Fish Club, Pawleys Plantation Golf Club, and True Blue Golf Club.
That group, along with TPC Myrtle Beach, understandably commands much of the spotlight, but there’s another reason traveling golfers love the South Strand: it’s home to some of the Grand Strand’s hidden gems.
If your group is headed to the Litchfield-Pawleys Island area, here are five courses that deliver quality golf and exceptional value.
River Club
No, there isn’t actually a river running through the property, but the Tom Jackson-designed River Club features plenty of water and one of the area’s most memorable finishing holes. The risk-reward par-5 18th demands a bold carry over water and provides a dramatic conclusion to a layout that offers a little bit of everything. Make time afterward for lunch at Jackson’s View, the course’s new clubhouse restaurant.
Tradition Club
Architect Ron Garl is best known for his work in Florida, but Tradition Club, his lone Myrtle Beach area design, introduced Myrtle Beach golfers to his work. Tradition is a player-friendly layout highlighted by the par-4 seventh and the par-5 14th, a hole Garl says gives players a taste of No. 15 at Augusta National. Pair the layout with one of the area’s best practice facilities, and it’s easy to understand Tradition’s popularity.
Litchfield Country Club
Litchfield was Pawleys Island’s first golf course (1966), and it still delivers the old-school country club atmosphere golfers love. The Willard Byrd design rewards accuracy off the tee and precision into greens that are small by modern standards. In an era of sprawling layouts, Litchfield remains a refreshing throwback your group will appreciate.
Willbrook
Golfers are drawn to the South Strand for its Lowcountry beauty, and Willbrook Plantation showcases it at every turn. The course features fairways framed by live oaks draped in Spanish moss, wetlands and more than a few alligators. The Dan Maples design blends scenic beauty with design variety, creating a round players remember long after the trip ends. (Willbrook top photo)
Founders Club at Pawleys Island
Founders Club serves as a modern counterpoint to nearby Litchfield, featuring elevated fairways, sprawling waste bunkers, and runoff areas around the greens. The Thomas Walker design sits a little farther south but golfers willing to make the drive are rewarded with a course that exceeds expectations.
