Wild Wing’s Avocet Course Renovation Hits Major Milestones as Course Continues to Take Shape

Every major golf course renovation reaches a point where golfers can finally begin to picture the finished product. At Wild Wing’s Avocet Course, that moment has arrived.

We caught up with golf course superintendent Chris Seymour for an on-site progress update as work continues on the club’s extensive renovation. While there’s still work ahead before golfers return, the transformation taking place across the Avocet Course is becoming impossible to miss.

The Greens Have Entered Their Next Phase

One of the biggest milestones came this week as crews began sprigging the Avocet Course’s new greens with Tif 3D bermudagrass, the newest generation of Tif turf.

“It’s the newest variety of Tif,” Seymour said. “It’s called Tif 3D, which stands for denser, darker and more durable, and we’ll be the first course in the area to have these greens.”

Once sprigging is complete, the focus shifts toward growing in the putting surfaces before they mature into the premium conditions golfers will experience when the course reopens.

Bunkers Nearing Completion

The transformation extends well beyond the greens.

Construction on the greenside bunkers is nearly complete, with crews finishing the new concrete liners before turning their attention to filling them with sand. Fairway bunker work continues, while most of the bunker surrounds have already been sodded. On the front nine, the bunker renovation is essentially complete.

The rebuilt bunker system is designed to perform as well as it looks.

“The bunkers will be dramatically less maintenance with all new drainage,” Seymour explained. “The sand shouldn’t wash out, it should stay clean, and the zoysia around the bunkers will lessen the maintenance for those as well.”

The improvements should provide golfers with more consistent playing conditions while reducing maintenance demands long after the course reopens.

A More Open Golf Course

One of the most noticeable changes isn’t just found in the turf or bunkers—it’s in the overall look and feel of the golf course.

Throughout the property, wooded areas have been selectively cleared to improve sightlines and create a much more expansive layout.

“Seeing the transformation has been the most exciting part,” Seymour said. “The bunkers will look completely different. We’ve cleared out a lot of the wooded areas, opened up the views, and the golf course will feel a lot more open. It feels bigger now than it did previously.”

The result is a course that not only looks dramatically different but also showcases more of the property’s natural beauty.

Larger Greens and Better Playing Options

While the greens haven’t increased dramatically in overall size—adding roughly a half-acre across the course—players will notice more generous putting surfaces on several holes, particularly the ninth green.

Just as significant are the expanded approaches leading into the greens.

The redesign places a greater emphasis on playability, giving golfers more options to run shots onto the putting surfaces instead of requiring every approach to be played through the air. Combined with softened contours and improved drainage, the changes are designed to make the Avocet Course more enjoyable for golfers of every skill level while preserving its character.

Building Toward the ReopeningWild Wing 17th

Although plenty of work remains before golfers return, the Avocet Course has reached one of the most exciting stages of the renovation.

New Tif 3D greens, completely rebuilt bunkers, expanded approaches, improved drainage, and dramatically enhanced views are all coming together to create what promises to be one of the Grand Strand’s most anticipated course reopenings.

Asked what golfers will notice first when they return, Seymour didn’t hesitate.

“The greens, number one,” he said. “The approaches are going to be larger, trying to make it more playable for people, and the views… the views will be totally different on several holes.”

When the Avocet Course reopens, longtime Wild Wing golfers will find the same enjoyable layout they remember—but with modern turfgrass, rebuilt bunkers, expanded playing areas, improved infrastructure, and a fresh new look that should make the renovation well worth the wait.
