All right, everyone — I have a really unique golf tip that you're going to find pretty interesting because I'm using a toilet paper roll.
Now, I have to admit, I didn’t come up with this golf tip on my own. I actually found it on Instagram from an amazing Korean golf instructor, and I’m going to go ahead and put his information right here because this is brilliant.
So, what we’re going to work on today is timing with our irons and driver.
How does this work? You’re going to grab a roll of toilet paper and start with a 7-iron. Slide the roll down the handle of your club, then get into your setup position. Take the club to the top, and let the toilet paper roll slide until it hits your hands.
The goal is to make sure your hands stay forward at impact — that’s key for a nice descending blow to the ball. You’ll hear the sound of the toilet paper sliding all the way down to the clubhead after impact, on the left side.
It’ll sound and look like this…
(You can hear the toilet paper roll sliding right in this area.)
Let’s do it again. Take it to the top — and again, you can hear that timing on the left side. That’s what you want with your irons.
Now, let’s grab the driver. We’re going to do the same thing, but the timing will be a little different. Because it’s a longer club, you want to create more lag, so the release happens on the right side — not the left.
With the driver, you’re creating an ascending blow to the ball. When you take it to the top and start down, the toilet paper roll should move toward the clubhead on the right side of the swing — just before impact.
Right here is where the toilet paper roll gets to the head. That creates lag and helps you hit up on the ball — exactly what you want for the driver.
So, to recap:
With your irons, the roll slides to the left side — descending blow, hands forward, compress the ball.
With your driver, the roll slides to the right side — ascending blow, creating lag and lift.
I love this simple drill because it’s so effective for timing — and everyone can do it. I mean, hopefully, everyone has a toilet paper roll at home!
Give it a try and see how it helps your timing with both your irons and driver.
