Do you get stressed out over those six-foot clutch putts? Those can be a little scary. But I'm going to help calm your nerves and walk you through a few simple putting tips that are really going to change your short game.
I'm Meredith Kirk, LPGA Class A Teaching Professional, and today I'm at Myrtlewood Golf Club.
Okay, let me show you how to drain these six-foot putts.
What you want to do is create a really good putting routine, which means stepping behind the ball and finding the line that the ball is rolling on. This is a pretty straight shot, so if I'm looking at the cup like it's a clock, it's going to roll in around six o'clock. That’s a little trick I use—I always imagine the bottom of the cup as a clock.
Now I'm going to go ahead—and I like to put my club behind the ball to help me align my body. You don't have to do this; it's just a little trick I like when setting up.
Next, I'm going to square the putter head and slightly close the face. When it comes to putting, you want to roll the ball—you don’t want to hit the ball. By delofting the face a little bit, you'll get a nice touch and good centerness of contact on the putter head.
As I'm looking at the hole, I’m focused on that six o'clock point at the bottom of the cup. Don't look at the entire hole—that's key. Pick out a little spot in front of the hole where you want the ball to roll in.
Okay, here we go...
Just like that. Steady and smooth.
