Do your arms collapse at impact, or are you struggling to get through full extension? LPGA Class A Teaching Professional Meredith Kirk shares a simple towel drill designed to help you keep your arms connected through impact, improve extension and swing path down the target line, build better tempo and pace if you tend to swing too fast, and ultimately add consistency, distance, and solid contact to your shots.

Are you struggling to get your arms through extension? I'm Meredith Kirk, LPGA Class A teaching professional, and today I have a really cool trick that's going to help you with getting those arms through extension. So, why do I have a towel? Well, I'm getting ready to show you because we are getting ready to use this to put underneath our arms. So, as you can see, I just have a standard towel. I'm gonna fold it up here just like this. It's going to be kind of long. And what I'm going to do is I'm going to put it underneath my arms. Why? Because we're talking about the arms collapsing at impact and not getting through extension. Now, I'm going to grab a wedge here, and I'm actually going to motion out the golf swing a little bit because I want to show you, first of all, what happens if your arms are collapsing, because some of you may not even know if your arms are collapsing. So, I'm going to go ahead and set up and I'm going to make a swing and then I'm going to show you what collapsed arms and an extension that the arms are not coming through looks like. So, it's going to look like this. The towel drops. So, what it is, it's a bending of the arms. Okay? Sometimes it's a little sway back. It's a little scooping motion, but those arms are not straight and going through impact. Okay? Because you're losing power. You're losing distance, and you're losing centerness of contact when your arms collapse. Okay? The face of the club, it's going to open and close. It's not going to be a great shot. So, I'm going to grab the towel again, fold it up, put it underneath my arms, and let me show you what this looks like from this angle right here of the arms not collapsing. So, I have it nice and snug. You want to feel it snug across your chest like this. And I'm just going to motion out the swing into the finished position like this. So, I'm going to go back, motion out again, into the finished position. Look, the towel is not dropping. So, that's an indicator that my arms are not collapsing, and that's what we want. So, I want to make sure not only that my arms do not collapse at impact, but I'm actually able to keep that club going straight down the target line through extension. All right. So, I'm going to hit some shots now. So, the goal is you don't want the towel to drop. So, here we go. Like I said, I have a wedge here. We're just going to make some nice soft shots here. Hold to finish. Oh, this feels really good. You know, it actually, as I'm doing this, I feel like it's giving me a better tempo, a better pace. If you have a tendency to swing too fast, I think this will help you with your tempo as well. All right, really good shots. I'm happy with that. So my arms were not collapsing. Okay, we don't want this. We want our arms coming down and through impact. You're going to have centeredness of contact. You're going to create more velocity, which is distance. This is an awesome drill. So, grab a beach towel, grab a house towel, just grab a towel, try this drill. If you like this golf tip, go ahead and like, subscribe to this page, comment below.
