What's going on, guys? Brian here at TPC Myrtle Beach with Myrtle Beach Golf Trips. Welcome back to Tip of the Week.
Today, we're going to talk about ball position when it comes to hitting fairway woods off the ground.
What a lot of people get wrong is they start worrying about how to get the ball up in the air. So they put the ball toward the front of their stance and add a little spine tilt.
You don't want to do that, and the reason why is that the clubhead is going to come up. You're going to hit the bottom of the club, top the ball or maybe even hit it thin.
Instead, we're going to pretend we're hitting an iron shot. We're actually going to put the ball a little farther back in our stance. Not necessarily in the middle, but still slightly forward.
There are three things that get the ball up in the air: speed, loft and descent angle.
So, if you treat this like you're hitting an iron shot, you're going to make clean contact and get the ball up in the air.
What I'm going to do is set up to the ball and position it slightly farther back in my stance, but still forward, just to make sure the clubface squares up at impact.
When you do that, the ball is going to get up in the air with plenty of hang time, more carry distance and more roll.
Brian Sears of TPC Myrtle Beach shares a simple ball-position adjustment that can help golfers make cleaner contact, stop topping their fairway woods and generate more distance off the turf.
