What's going on, guys? Brian here at TPC Myrtle Beach with Myrtle Beach Golf Trips. Welcome back to Tip of the Week.
Today, we're talking about tempo and why it's so important to your golf swing.
If you get a little too quick on the backswing, you never really know where the club is going. You might take it too far outside or pull it too far inside. Having a nice, easy, smooth tempo on the backswing helps get the club on the right plane.
You may have seen PGA Tour pros bring the club back and stop to check its position. They're making sure the club is on the proper plane. When you get too quick, it becomes much harder to know exactly where that club is.
Here's a simple drill you can use before you swing. Bring the club back and check that the shaft is parallel to the ground and pointing down the target line. That's exactly where you want it.
Practice bringing the club back to that position and then continuing through the rest of the swing. When you do that with a smooth tempo, the club has a much better chance of staying on the correct plane.
That's why I always tell golfers to make a nice, easy, smooth swing. Good tempo helps put the club in the right position during the backswing, gets you into a better position at impact and allows you to make a balanced follow-through.
I'm going to make a nice, easy, smooth swing here.
When you do the same, you're going to have a better swing, better tempo, better ball contact and hit more balls in the fairway.
