We don’t know about many of the other eight locations Bohemian Bull had on the map first.
But we’re pretty smitten with the rendition that popped up recently along the south end of South Carolina’s Grand Strand.
Taking over the location formerly inhabited by a former Old Chicago, the owners went to work making the shell of the building and what came next their own. The venue is clean and has plenty of space to move around. Clearly, the sardine feel of old is gone.
But enough about how comfortable the space and its tables are. Let’s get to the main event.
Bohemian Bull is fondly known as a burger-plus joint. Those main events feature “hand-spanked burgers” (their term) that are a combination of brisket and chuck beef. All of them are served on a brioche bun with a choice of side. From there, the flavors are up to you.
There’s the Black and Blue – which includes jalapeños, bacon jam and blue cheese. Or the Wake N’ Bake, where the patty is seasoned in coffee seasoning and topped with gouda, fried onion straws, jalapeños and bacon jam.
Not all of them are spiced up to the max, though. There’s also a truffle burger (exactly what you’d think it is) and what is anything but a run-of-the-mill bacon cheeseburger.
It’s not just a burger joint, though with half-priced Wednesday burgers, some may argue. From top to bottom, this two-sided menu is full of the good stuff. The fried green tomatoes (yes, these again) are amazing. The whipped feta and warm flat bread was a first for us, but also a big hit. The boom boom shrimp gave us yet another protein. And you can’t go to a beer garden without hitting up at least one of the pretzels and accompanying beer cheese.
From there, the “entree” section was pretty slim, but ahi tuna bowl and steak frites (thanks, table next to us) looked stout. There were also a bunch of salads and sandwiches, although we were way to full by that point to even fake order any of them.
If you’re gonna eat like that, you also need something to drink. Bohemian Bull had a jam-packed bar with just about anything you could think of. The weekday happy hour runs from 4-7 p.m., and most of the aforementioned apps are heavily discounted, as are beer pints and house liquors and wines. For good measure, the monthly mixed drink specials while we were there included one vodka-based drink, one rum (frozen) and a bourbon.
The casual environment would be good for a game, as there are plenty of TVs. But we’re banking on you loving the food.
