Myrtle Beach Golf Trips Ambassador and LPGA Instructor Meredith Kirk caught up with the number one player in the world while he was at TPC Myrtle Beach for the Dustin Johnson World Junior Championship
Meredith: I caught up with Dustin Johnson about what it takes to be an Elite Junior golfer.
So, we’re talking about Junior golf and I’m very curious about your Junior Golf experience at this same age. So, if you went back in time, where were you at in high school golf?
Dustin: I was in Columbia and then playing … Yeah, I played a lot of South Carolina Junior Golf events and then played some AJGA stuff.
Meredith: Were you at this level when it came to your scoring?
Dustin: Yeah, I would … Maybe close. Yeah, I would say … I mean, I was one of the top juniors in the state, I would say. I don’t know, that’s a long time ago.
Meredith: I know.
Dustin: It’s hard to remember. But yeah, as far as I can remember, I think I was pretty good.
Meredith: Yeah. So, if a junior golfer is watching this video right now, and let’s say they love golf, they’re pursuing it, but they’re not at the top yet at high school golf. What would you tell that junior golfer to give them hope, to keep pursuing their dreams with golf?
Dustin: You just keep working hard, keep practicing. Work on your weaknesses. For me, I mean, I definitely wasn’t the best golfer coming out of high school. Or even when I got into college, I turned into a better golfer through college. So yeah, I think obviously college should be a goal. I think it definitely helped me get to where I’m at, is going to college. So, I would say that and just keep working on your game.
Meredith: Okay. All right. And then college golf. I mean, other than being part of a team and just having that environment where you’re training all the time, what would be your best advice?
Dustin: For-
Meredith: Aside from just working as a team together and working on your game-
Dustin: Yeah. Just keep trying to get better. Every day, figure out some way where you can get a little bit better than you were the day before.
Meredith: Yeah. And then, enter a lot of tournaments? I mean, do you think just getting out and just playing in as many tournaments that you can, that makes a big difference?
Dustin: Yeah, playing tournaments, playing golf, just learning how to compete is definitely … Is a big part of it.
Meredith: All right. Guys, so you heard it from the best right here. So if you didn’t get a chance to qualify for this event, but you want to pursue golf, hey, just keep working at it and you can make it.
