Buffalo’s Best Lands in Myrtle Beach: Anchor Bar Brings the Original Wing South

Buffalo wings, America’s most popular bar food, were born in upstate New York in March of 1964. The combination of heat and twang, created by Teressa Bellissimo in Buffalo, has spread to every part of America, and this delicacy’s origin story has now touched Myrtle Beach.

Anchor Bar, home of the “original Buffalo wing,” has opened a location in the Golf Capital of the World, and it has immediately taken its place among the area’s best sports bars. Located on 64th Avenue North in Myrtle Beach, a convenient location for golfers, Anchor Bar has multiple dining rooms and more TVs than you could ever hope to watch.

But let’s get to the real question – how are the wings?

They absolutely live up to the hype.

With 11 sauces and four rubs (habanero ranch, Buffalo, Buffalo ranch, and Old Bay) to slather on traditional or boneless wings there is a flavor for everyone. If you like your wings crispy, the Anchor Bar will put a smile on your face no matter how you played.

If, for whatever strange reason, you don’t like chicken wings, the app menu features loaded fries or tots smothered in white queso, crispy bacon, and chives, as well as pizza logs – egg rolls stuffed with mozzarella, pepperoni, and served with a side of pizza sauce.

Throw in an entree menu that ranges from Cajun salmon to chicken parm, burgers and pizza and the Anchor Bar has a little bit of everything.

While I can’t offer a personal testimony for the pizza, it looked outstanding and the couple on the other side of the bar made quick work of their pie when I was there.

The beer menu is expansive – the Salty Golfer, a pineapple blonde from Grand Strand Brewery, comes highly recommended – and the bar staff is friendly.

Myrtle Beach’s Anchor Bar location has been open for less than a year, but there are few better places to watch a game, and you get to enjoy the “original” Buffalo wings recipe. If you are a Bills fan on Sundays in the fall, it’s almost like being at home – minus the cold weather, of course.
