Are you tired of scooping at impact? Do you have a tendency to flip your wrist? I'm Meredith Kirk, class A LPGA teaching professional, and today I'm going to show you how to make solid impact.
So, you are probably wondering, why does Meridith have a sleeping bag in a bag on the range at Grand Junes Golf Resort? Well, it's part of the drill that I'm going to show you to stop scooping and flipping your hands at impact. So, what you want to do is you want to find something like this. It can be maybe a bean bag, a sleeping bag like I have in the bag, just something that's heavy and that you can hit into. But don't do this with your friends. All right. What you want to do is set up and pretend that you're actually going to hit a shot. So, you want to do this with I would encourage, you know, maybe an eight iron, a 9 iron. You don't want to do it with a longer club, just a shorter club. So, I have my nine iron here. I'm going to set up. I'm going to take the club back halfway. And then what I'm going to do is I'm going to swing into the bag. Don't be afraid to hit it. So, if you notice as I'm swinging right here, look at my hands. My hands are in front of the club head. Look at my hips. If I put the club up against my hips, my hips are starting to open. And then if you were looking at my lead leg, looks like I'm starting to have some weight transfer. That's what you want. So people who are swinging and they're scooping, they're not getting the weight on the lead foot, the weight is falling back. Or if you're really handsy and you're a flipper, well, if you're flipping the club like this, you're just not going to have good golf mechanics. We want you to have that nice solid shot. So, the drill is this. You're going to set up and you're going to hit into the bag five to 10 times. And you can do it consistently. Check your hands. Make sure your hands are in front of the club head. Set up again. Swing into it. Again, hands are in front of the club head. Now, as you do this, the bag may move a little bit. That's okay. You just set up again. Go back and hit. You really want to feel this motion, engage in it, and that's going to help build that muscle memory. Okay. So, what I'm going to do now is I'm going to move the bag. I'm going to slide it over here. And I'm actually going to hit a shot. Thinking about the feeling of my hands in front of the club head, feeling the weight transfer on the lead side, feeling my hips open up a little bit. You do that, you're going to have a good shot. So, I'm going to give it a try here. Nice and easy. No flippy, no scoopy. That's going bye-bye. Oh yeah, that felt good. I had a nice tempo on it. My hands were slightly in front of that club face. So there you go. There's a great drill for you to help you quit scooping and stop the flipping.
