All right, everyone. Are you a swayer? I mean, swaying in your golf swing—do you have issues with that? Well, I'm getting ready to give you a tip to help cure your sway.
Let's talk first about what swaying is and what it looks like. I'm going to go ahead and hit a shot for you, and I'm going to add a lot of sway. So, setting up to the ball—and again, it's going to be a lot of movement with my lower body. A sway looks like this.
So, I didn’t really hit a solid shot. As you can see, I kind of came out of my posture. My weight distribution was moving to the right, moving to the left. It just was not very stable, right? So how do you correct that? If you have issues with the sway, this is going to be such an easy golf fix. I mean, you’re going to solve it right now.
All you have to do is set up to the ball and put your feet together—your heels are going to touch. Go ahead and get set up and get comfortable. Now you’re going to start out making half swings, and I want you to think about the center of your swing—the core, your spine. All you’re going to do is rotate through the shot.
Now, as you’re rotating, the hips do move a little bit, but watch how the hips move. If I’m moving back, they move back a little—about 45 degrees—and then they move forward about 45 degrees. What you don’t want is this. We’re not doing a little sway dance here. We’re eliminating that.
So I’m going to go ahead and hit a half swing right here. It’s going to be nice and controlled. I’m really focused on the rotation.
That was a nice solid shot. Now, this creates tempo and rhythm in the golf swing. This slows your swing down a little bit. When I say slowing it down, that doesn’t necessarily mean that slowing your golf swing is a bad thing. Actually, you can sometimes generate more power by slowing down because you’re making better contact with the ball.
I’m going to go ahead and set up to another ball. This time I’m going to raise it up to a three-quarter to full swing with my feet together. Again, this keeps you nice and controlled. It quiets everything from your navel down. So we’re quieting the lower body by putting the feet together—that’s the goal of this drill.
So here I go: more of a fuller swing. I still have a little rotation in my lower body, but primarily upper body.
Nice solid shot. Honestly, that was a near-perfect shot. You know why? My feet are together, I had nice rotation, I swung from the core—my spine—and I was really controlled because my lower body again is very quiet.
So if you start hitting really good shots with your feet together, I want you to try 10, 15—maybe even an entire bucket of balls—with your feet together. Develop that muscle memory. Really connect with the feeling and the outcome you’re going to get. And then you can slowly open up your feet. The wider you go, the more activation you get in the lower body—and if you’re a swayer, sometimes that is not necessarily a good thing.
So again, if you need to quiet things down and eliminate that sway, all you have to do is put your feet together.
I hope that golf tip helped you get rid of that sway. If it did, seriously, I want to hear from you—comment below and let me know how that golf drill went for you.
