The wait is almost over at Wild Wing.

Following a summer of extensive improvements to both the golf course and clubhouse, the Avocet Course is on schedule to reopen September 19, and General Manager Mark Andrews says the project has reached exactly the point the team hoped it would.

All major work on the golf course has been completed. With favorable weather helping the project stay on schedule throughout the summer, the focus between now and opening day is simple: let everything continue to mature.

“We had a really good summer as far as weather — rain when we needed it, sun when we needed it,” Andrews said. “All the work got done on time, and it’s awesome that we’re at a point where we’re just in the growing process until we open.”

For golfers familiar with Avocet, the course they return to will retain the personality that has made it a Myrtle Beach favorite while offering a noticeably refreshed look and playing experience.

New Tif3D Greens Ready for Their Debut

Among the biggest changes is the installation of Tif3D bermudagrass on Avocet’s putting surfaces.

The new greens have grown in exceptionally well, according to Andrews, and will continue to mature in the weeks leading into the reopening.

“It’ll only get better by the 19th,” Andrews said.

Golfers will also find larger putting surfaces than they remember. Expanding the greens provides additional hole locations while restoring more of the intended putting areas.

The added space doesn’t mean Avocet’s greens will be easy. Andrews noted that the putting surfaces still have plenty of movement and the ability to produce some challenging hole locations.

A Cleaner, More Modern Look Around the Greens

The transformation extends well beyond the putting surfaces.

Avocet’s greenside bunkers have been renovated and reshaped, with many reduced in size to improve playability and create cleaner sight lines throughout the course.

The bunkers now feature new white sand along with capillary concrete liners designed to improve drainage, an upgrade golfers should especially appreciate following heavy rain.

The finished product provides a more modern presentation than Avocet’s previous bunker style, which featured some of the higher faces and pronounced lips common to courses built during the 1990s.

The result is a cleaner appearance that complements the new greens while maintaining the strategic role of the bunkers.

“The sight lines look really, really good out there now,” Andrews said.

The Improvements Continue Inside the Clubhouse

Golfers returning September 19 will find plenty of changes after the final putt drops as well.

Wild Wing’s clubhouse has undergone a significant renovation, beginning with a refreshed exterior and continuing throughout the golf shop and grill.

The golf shop is stocked and ready for opening, while finishing work continues in the grill area.

One of the most noticeable additions will be two golf simulators, creating another reason for golfers and groups to spend time at Wild Wing before or after their rounds.

The renovated grill will also feature a new-look bar and new televisions, adding to an area that was already a popular gathering spot for golf groups.

“The simulators are being installed as we speak, and everything will be ready to go by the 19th,” Andrews said.

September 19 Is the Date

After months of work, there is no frantic race to finish the golf course as opening day approaches.

The heavy lifting is done.

The bunkers are complete. The new greens are growing in. The course is taking shape, and finishing touches are underway inside the clubhouse.

Now Wild Wing can use the remaining time to allow the improvements to mature before golfers get their first opportunity to experience the renovated Avocet Course.

Andrews believes it will be more than ready.

“September 19 is when the golf course will open,” he said, “and it will be very ready for play.”
