Burky’s is back, baby!
Before we get any further with the popular Myrtle Beach 50s-stye diner on the north end of Kings Highway, we need to let you know why those of us who live here are so excited. Near the end of 2023, a kitchen fire left extensive damage to the standalone property closed. For nearly 18 months, an oversized construction dumpster was a reminder to passersby that the restaurant was still closed.
Until, in April, the dumpster was removed and the final steps toward reopening were there. In May, Burky’s re-opened its doors to plenty of media fanfare.
Within days, word has spread, and the days of old were new again.
Burky’s is so many things at once. It’s a low-key type stop for local beach goers to grab a bag of food to take to the sand. It’s chill enough low-key work lunch. It’s a post-round mainstay for golfers staying and/or playing in city limits.
Want to grab and go? There’s a drive through. Need a quick table? Most visitors are in and out in 20-25 minutes. Don’t want to feel rushed? We’ve eaten next to folks in full suits. All are welcomed, because all feel comfortable.
That’s not the approach from your classic diner. The rest follows suit. You walk up to the counter to order, the person at the register repeats it into a intercom system (oddly enough the grill is about 12 feet away), you pay and then fill your own drink and find a table. Even on busy days, most meals are out in a matter of minutes despite the fact none of it is pre-cooked.
Burgers, hot dogs, chicken wings, chili, fries, salads, shakes. They’re all prepared fresh, and everything taste like it. The next best part is the price. Burky’s is flat-out cheap.
Need an example?
Four of us recently ate there after the grand re-opening for a whopping $32.
Try that anywhere else and compare notes. We’ll wait.
Just the same, Burkys will never hurt for business. It’s built on quality while knowing quantity will follow. After all, this was a restaurant that was still drawing regular Yelp reviews during the 18-month closure. Patrons anxiously awaited its return.
And now, Burky’s is back.
