William Lisle (Benton, Ark.) and Fay Jia (Murrieta, Calif.) rallied to victory at the 11th annual Dustin Johnson World Junior Golf Championship at TPC Myrtle Beach.
Lisle birdied the 18th hole to secure a one-shot victory after a roller-coaster final round. The University of Texas commitment entered Sunday with a two-stroke lead but stumbled early, shooting 2-over 38 on the front nine and then bogeying the 11th hole to surrender the lead to Chase Bauer (Gotha, Fla.).
Bauer surged into contention with a blistering 5-under 31 on the front nine, pushing him to 5-under par for the tournament.
But the momentum shifted again down the stretch. Lisle eagled the par-5 14th hole and followed with birdies on Nos. 16 and 18 to finish the tournament at 4-under par, one stroke clear of Bauer, who bogeyed the 10th and 13th holes on the back nine.
Theodore Snyder (Gig Harbor, Wash.) finished third at 1-under par, three strokes behind Lisle.
On the girls side, Jia began the final round trailing leader Alexandra Snyder by six shots, but her 1-under 71 proved enough to claim a four-shot victory on a day when much of the field struggled.
Jia, who won the American Junior Golf Association’s Seri Pak Desert Junior last summer, finished the championship at even par, four strokes ahead of Eileen Park (Red Deer, Canada), Macie Rasmussen (Chesapeake, Va.) and Michelle Xing (Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada).
Snyder, who fired a 4-under 68 Saturday – the lowest round of the week for either the boys or girls – was unable to sustain that momentum Sunday. She shot 86 in the final round and finished tied for ninth.
The weather was ideal throughout the weekend, and the Tom Fazio-designed TPC Myrtle Beach again provided a stern test for one of junior golf’s strongest fields. This year’s DJ World Junior featured 35 boys ranked among the top 100 in the Universal Golf Rankings, while 24 of the 30 girls in the field were also ranked inside the top 100.
