Leopard’s Chase

Leopard’s Chase is a Tom Cate design and the fourth of the “Big Cats” courses at Ocean Ridge Plantation. In 2007, Leopard’s Chase was named by both Golf Digest and Golf Magazine as one of the “Top 10 New Public Courses in America.”

The fairways feature TifSport Bermuda, and the greens use a well-manicured L-93 Bermuda grass. Most of the original vistas and marshlands from this 220-acre track remain intact. But it’s how the course – which plays as long as 7,155 yards in this five-tee system – was designed to incorporate the native environment that gives Leopard’s Chase a pristine feel. Bunkers were added alongside natural grasses, and the visual elements offer striking contrasts, both to the eye and the ensuing pictures.

The partial-island green on the par-4 No. 5 is encased in pearl-white sand and a waste bunker that extends back into the fairway. Your round is not complete until you’ve played No. 18, a 439-yard par 4 that includes a cascading, man-made waterfall fronting of an elevated green.

Located just across the state line in Ocean Isle Beach, N.C., Leopard’s Chase is just a short drive north on U.S. 17 from downtown Myrtle Beach.

First time playing the course and we really enjoyed it. Course was in good condition despite the rain earlier in the week and the greens were good. We will play again for sure on a future visit.

Loved the layout, a little rough around the edges & the greens were real slow. Coming back in Sept, hoping it will be in great shape, thought it was a very fun course.

This was a good track. The real challenge is on the back nine. I am still trying to figure out how to play the 11th hole. Knowing landing areas on the back nine would have been helpful. Starter was very personable.

From the bag drop to the grill the staff was very friendly and engaging. The ranger came by several times and was equally as friendly. The course while challenging was in very good condition despite the amount of rain in previous weeks. Greens were smooth and well maintained. The Big Cat package should be on everyone's must play list.

Tees were good, not great. Fairways were good. Greens looked great, but played slow and soft. And I don't think they were slow due to rain. Just plain soft, but they putted true. It was a very busy day at the club, but the entire staff was great! Delicious breakfast sandwich. Fairways are a little tight (at least for this 12 handicap). I enjoyed Leopard's Chase and recommend it. It's not quite as good as Tiger's Eye, but it's one of the best on the NC side of Myrtle.

The staff and people we met were very friendly. We did not like that we had to ride only in the rough on the cart path side due to seeding the fairways. We try to understand that this is necessary. We would have liked to know this prior to playing. The most difficult of the Cats. On par or better landscaping than Tigers Eye. I love the use of waste bunkers as cart paths. The rough was cut to low.

A fantastic course even though fairly difficult for the average golfer...wind was quite gusty so made play even more difficult but it was truly a beautiful course and we will definitely play again one day...

Original tee time in AM but raining. The Pro Shop rescheduled for PM start which was appreciated but we had to play the last hole in the dark.

Staff was fairly nice as we played this course on June 29th. Nothing spectacular about the pro shop except the lady working the counter. The course is brutal. Bunkers everywhere, but tee to green in great shape. Will be playing it real soon.

Have played Leopards Chase about a dozen times and continue to enjoy each round. Great combination of design, landscaping, scenery, on a well-maintained course. Have yet to play it when it was not in top shape. Always play a swift round, even during peak times.

Leopard's Chase was very beautiful. Errant tee shots ended up in bunkers, as the course was slightly more narrow than Tiger's Eye or Panther's Run. The greens had been punched 2 weeks prior but had healed up excellent. They caught any iron shots into them and were a wonderful surface to putt. The fairways could have been grown in slightly thicker as they were more spare for grass than the other courses, but this could be due to it being the newest course as well. Beautiful course though and another must-play!

Our group had a great time at Leopard's Chase Saturday. The course offers a wide variety of hole designs and challenging shots. I was unaware that they have 5 par 3's and 5 par 5's on that course. We found that to be a nice change of pace from everyday play. The course was in very good shape and the staff was very friendly and helpful. I would go back anytime.

Surprised that overseeding requires carts to be kept off fairways.

This is a beautiful golf course. Look forward to playing it again. Only negative is the greens had some dead spots.

Totally lost fairways due to no watering. Courses like Farmstead just down the street and in same county were in great shape and almost half the price. I've requested a refund via email and no response after two weeks. Very unhappy.

Played Leopard's Chase on July 18th. The greens were in excellent condition. The rest of the course was brown and in desperate need of water.

Played mid afternoon with my 2 junior sons. Bag attendant great and really helpful. Pro shop staff was nasty and confrontational at check in. Told on phone 2 juniors is fine, not so with the Pro at check in. Essentially told me to go elsewhere despite the fact we were the only players on the course. Course/clubhouse were a ghost town and conditions of greens and traps were atrocious especially for this new Cats showplace. Always loved the Cats, but this is one I won't play again.

The course is finally maturing. As for all Tim Cate courses, you get challenge and scenic venues. This course has some punishing carries and requires placement from the tee box. Greens are well-sized but very undulating and benefit from proper approach positions.

Played 2 March. Course was in great shape considering the miserable winter in the area. No clubhouse yet, with only a mobile building for temporary pro-shop. Challenging and uniques holes throughout and in very good condition. Greens were among the best we played over 9 courses in the area at this time.

They should offer a food package with your green fee b/c if you don't bring your A game, Leopards Chase will eat your lunch! Greens were phenomenal when I played in the fall last year, but I've heard they are having real issues this year. I would double check with someone before spending the cash. The other Cat courses are in good shape - just played Lion's Paw last week (10/22/09).

Commented on November 22, 2008: Played this not long after it opened and found it very difficult (off the back tees!) but another great course in the Ocean Plantation (played them all - Tigers Eye is our favorite). We would play this again.

Commented on August 15, 2008: I played Leopard's Chase on July 27 and it was the best golf experience that I have had in along time. The course is beautiful and difficult. The staff was excellent. I can understand why they charge $150+ in the spring and fall.
