The ONEflight Myrtle Beach Classic might be an opposite-field event, but that doesn’t mean it’s absent of quality players and compelling storylines.
A former major champion, a newly minted Presidents Cup captain, and several rising young stars will be competing in the second annual tournament at the Dunes Golf & Beach Club.
As you make plans to attend the Myrtle Beach Classic, here are 10 players you will want to keep an eye on:
-
Three-time Tour winner Tom Kim hasn’t been in great form this year, but he must be among the pre-tournament favorites. The demonstrative 22-year-old already has seven worldwide wins to his credit and is looking to sharpen his game heading into next week’s PGA Championship. (Pictured right) -
Blades Brown, the teenage sensation who made the cut as a 16-year-old last year, is returning, and this year he is playing as a professional. He finished T2 in a Korn Ferry Tour event two weeks ago and will arrive in Myrtle Beach with positive memories. Can he do the unthinkable and win on Tour before turning 18?
-
Defending champion Chris Gotterup was unable to build on his triumph at the 2024 Myrtle Beach Classic, but he has rediscovered his form in recent weeks, recording four top-20 finishes in his last five starts. FWIW, if you are a gambler, Gotterup is a boom-or-bust player. He has missed eight cuts in 15 starts this year but has finished in the top 25 in six of the seven times he has seen the weekend.
-
Francesco Molinari will be in the Golf Capital of the World trying to regain the form that helped him capture the 2018 British Open Championship. Molinari, who has played on three winning Ryder Cup teams, has three PGA Tour wins.
-
Golf has a reputation for being a staid game, but if you are looking for a potentially volatile personality, follow Alejandro Tosti. The Argentinian has had his share of run-ins over the years, but he is a fun watch, with the ability to make birdies and bogeys in equal doses.
-
Can one of the game’s great putters tame the Dunes Club’s daunting greens? Brandt Snedeker, who was just named Presidents Cup
captain, will provide the answer. The 9-time PGA Tour winner is still battling back after a sternum injury and arrives in Myrtle Beach having made the cut in three of his last four events. (Pictured right) -
If you want to root for a guy to bounce back from adversity and earn a cathartic victory, Joel Dahmen is your man. A breakout star on season one of the Netflix series Full Swing, Dahmen bogeyed the final three holes at the Corales Puntacana Championship last month to finish tied for second, one shot behind tournament winner Garrick Higgo. Dahmen has only made six cuts in 13 events, but he has three top 10s.
-
Sometimes the people who commentate on the games we watch are as popular as those who play it, which means Kevin Kisner will have more than a few followers this week. The lead analyst on NBC Sports’ golf coverage, Kisner is a native South Carolinian and a four-time winner on Tour.
-
If you want to see someone hit the ball a mile, Aldrich Potgieter is a must-watch. The South African leads the Tour in driving with an average of 323 yards, and he is 10th in strokes gained off the tee. Unfortunately, he is 149th in strokes gained approach and 176th in strokes gained around the green. It may be an adventure, but it will be fun to watch.
-
Alistair Docherty is returning this year in hopes of completing the final step in what would be a dream journey to the winner’s circle on the PGA Tour. Docherty played on a sponsor exemption from Barstool Sports in last year’s Myrtle Beach Classic and finished second on the strength of a final-round 64.
With established names and rising stars in the field, this “opposite-field” event should deliver plenty of quality and drama.
