Skill Drills with Meredith Kirk: Coin Holder Putting Drill

Hi, I'm Meredith Kirk, LPGA Teaching pro, and today I'm going to give you a quick putting tip. All you need is a dime or a penny. What you want to do is grab the coin, and you can place it on the center of the flange on your putter, right there. Now, what you want to do is you can bring the putter down, and what we're going to do is we're going to motion out this putting stroke with the coin in the center of the flange. What this is going to do, it's going to stabilize the putter head, give you good centeredness of contact, and keep you on line during the putt. So with the coin, you're going to take the putter back, and forward, just motion out this stroke. Now, this is great for your shorter putts, I wouldn't recommend this tip for any putt that's outside of 10 feet. So this is a good tip for the shorter putts. Now, as you keep working on this motion, what's it going to do, it's going to give you good stability with the putter head. So if you're a yippee putter, or you have a tendency to push or pull your shots, it's going to keep you nice and steady. You want that nice, smooth stroke. So once you're done motioning out, you can ditch the coin, and now grab a ball. Here I am, about six feet, five, six feet from the pin here, nice short putt. A little bit to the right, but what it does is it creates a nice, steady contact to the ball with that putter head, keep you on line. So if you've got issues with the yips, this is a great way to solve it. Next time you're on the putting green, just use a penny, use a dime, use a coin that you have, put it on the center of the flange, and watch how it's going to make a difference when it comes to your shorter putts.
