Big Break Myrtle Beach Video Spotlight: Building the Big Break Sand Sculpture

The anticipation continues to build as the premiere of Big Break Myrtle Beach approaches! Golf Channel’s hit reality series visits the Grand Strand in its season debut on Tuesday, Oct. 7, 9 p.m. ET.

Six men and six women look to take the next big step in their aspiring professional golf careers, against the dramatic backdrop of two of the Myrtle Beach area’s showcase venues: Barefoot Resort & Golf in North Myrtle Beach, and Pawleys Plantation Golf & Country Club in Pawleys Island.

In this video feature, sand sculptor John May shows us how the iconic sand sculpture that appeared on the Grand Strand shoreline this summer to promote the series took shape.

John May:  Today, we're working probably about 8 hours to do the Big Break logo, so from start to finish, about 8 hours. We start shoveling our pile up into real wet and packing it. The beach sand drains water really efficiently, so when we bring in sand, we get something that packs together and holds water a little better, so we're not constantly adding water to it. We can compact it, and then carve it. We sketch it out, just like if I were going to draw a picture, I might sketch it and then add my detail. Well, I sketch out what we're carving and then take our tools and carve it to bring things out, bring things in and make it as 3-dimensional as possible.

Be sure to follow all the twists and turns of Big Break Myrtle Beach every Tuesday evening at 9 p.m. ET, only on Golf Channel!
