Meredith Kirk, lead instructor for the Dustin Johnson Golf School at TPC Myrtle Beach, paid a recent visit to Grande Dunes Resort Club – and, during a random observation of visiting golfers on the practice range, offered up some impromptu advice.
Meredith: Hey, Meredith here. I'm at the beautiful Grande Dunes. Today we have a group from Texas out here playing. While they're out on the range I'm going to go see if they need any fixing with their golf swings, give them a quick fix, one of the benefits of being an LPGA teaching pro. Come along with me and see if their quick fixes help fix your game.
(Meredith observes golfer’s swing)
Meredith: Okay, this is an easy fix. This is just a little tweak, nothing major but this really is going to help change your round today. What I'm going to do is I'm going to tee up another ball, and what I want you to do is go ahead and step up to the ball here, get comfortable. What I want you to feel is ... Actually you know what? Let's go for the red flag straight down the middle because I really want you to focus.
Golfer: Straight down there?
Meredith: Mm-hmm (affirmative). Go ahead and set up as if you're swinging straight down the middle, we're going for that first red flag. Now I'm going to grab the handle, and I want you to feel something. Before I grab it take a look at the club head, see how the club head is actually closed right now? We want to make sure that it's nice and flush to the ground and that it's square to the ball. That right there is square, it's going to feel a little different to you. Now when you take the club back what I want you to feel is you're taking it straight down the line. You have a tendency to go outside. Here, let me grab the club. You have tendency to do this, instead of doing that. We're going to stay down the target line. We're going to keep it more on the inside, here. Yeah, do you feel that? It's going to be a little bit different. Nice and easy, just straight back down the target line. Hold it, yeah. Good.
(Golfer swings again)
Meredith: There you go, that's how you do it.
Golfer: Thank you.
Meredith: How did it feel?
Golfer: It's my third swing of the day and it went a long way.
