King’s Korner: Where to Watch March Madness and The Masters in Myrtle Beach?

King Street Grille Market Common

Story by Chris King

This is the best time of year for sports fans as March Madness is quickly followed by The Masters, golf’s most popular and visually spectacular event. The greatest stretch in sports watching also coincides with the heart of the Myrtle Beach golf season, which naturally leads to this question: where do you want to watch the Sweet 16 or the third round of The Masters if you are here?

Wonder no more.

-- Admittedly, Anchor Cafe is a non-traditional viewing location but there are plenty of televisions and the bar is built on a deck overlooking the Intracoastal Waterway. It’s 75 degrees outside, you’ve completed a day on the course and you are watching The Masters on the waterway. Find a problem with that picture. I dare you.

-- The 501 corridor is full of great golf - Myrtle Beach National, Wild Wing and Legends Resort come immediately to mind - and the Grumpy Monk is the perfect place to watch a game before returning to your room. The half-price appetizers and sushi during happy hour (4-7 p.m.) are great, and you can thank me later for ordering the taste of explosion roll and loaded kegs. Throw-in more than 40 craft beers on tap, and the Grumpy Monk is hard to beat.

-- Market Common has exploded in popularity, and King Street Grille continues to lead the way for sports fans. If you want a little heat, order the Spanish Fly Burger, complete with sausage, jalapenos and pepper jack cheese. King Street Grille is a winner.

-- If your trip takes you to North Myrtle Beach, options are aplenty. Bully’s at Barefoot Landing has the best location, Oscar’s has the best food, but I’d recommend Hickory Tavern. The food is good and the TV setup is great, and that’s a tough combination to beat at this time of year.

-- On the South end, Island Bar attracts much of the attention, but I’ll take an alternative landing spot - Quigley’s Pint & Plate. Quigley’s is a wedge shot from Tradtion Golf Club and Willbrook and the restaurant serves better food than the other establishments on the list. If you stay on the bar side, there are plenty of TVs and it’s as comfortable a setting as you will find. Make sure you get an order of the fried pickles.
