The northern gateway to the Grand Strand golf scene features a wide range of options for your Myrtle Beach golf getaway, but none with quite the blend of “old” and “new” that course designer Tom Jackson offers at River Hills Golf & Country Club.

River Hills offers a unique thrill ride of non-parallel fairways, rolling hills and recurring elevation changes (many as much as 40 feet). After having undergone a thorough makeover in 2003, River Hills now boasts a layout that’s more forgiving for the higher handicapper when played from the proper sets of tees, yet maintains an imposing look and feel.

A course that’s tailor-made for shot makers will also reward those who can keep it straight off the tee. Many guests opt to play conservatively off the tee here for the most enjoyable experience, with hybrids and long irons as frequently viable options. Make the 150-yard marker your aiming point if you’re unsure.

With a well-appointed clubhouse and plentiful practice areas surrounding it, you’ll feel right at home both before and after your round.

Great course to play. 17 of us played on Saturday and the course was in great condition. There is a wide range of holes. The Par 5 17th is a classic. The staff is very friendly and great to work with. One of the best deals in the MB area.

Some very wet spots in a few fairways but no problem. Tee Boxes & Greens were excellent. Greens putted true. Overall condition very good. Staff very nice.

Course is in great shape. Staff is very friendly.

Course is in very good shape. A few thin spots on a couple of fairways. Greens rolled true. The bunkers need lots of work......

Course was pretty good - cart path only because of rain. Staff was good we were two so they sent us out before a large group.

This is a really well-run operation. Overall condition of the course was excellent. It's tough but fair. The staff is great, the practice facilities are great and the value is great. One of the best on the Strand.

Bob (Edenton, NC)

It was a great course to play, everything was inviting.

Tom (Alexandria, KY)

Craig (Cary, NC)

Course in excellent condition and staff were friendly and very helpful.

Charlie (Dunkirk, MD)

Very good.

Douglas (Roanoke, VA)

Too tight and unforgiving for our golf game.

Matt (Columbia, SC)

Great course.

Ron (Jamestown, NC)

Great layout, lots of water, staff was very nice. Great experience would love to do it again, aerated the greens a couple of weeks ago, when they come in it will be great.

Joseph (Schertz, TX)

Interesting layout. Greens were receptive and in great shape. Tee boxes were crowned making it hard to find a stance conducive to the shot needed. Overall a great value.

Louis (Erie, PA)

The staff was friendly and the course was in excellent condition.

Gene (Mickleton, NJ)

Great course in great condition

Denny (Lexington Park, MD)

Nice course, well maintained. Lots of dog legs mostly to the left. Some narrow fairways are lined with homes, a slight miscue and you're ball is in their yard or worse, hitting their house. And with water near some of the greens, be sure to have extra golf balls. I appreciated the course layout/yardage card.

We have played at River Hills a number of years in the winter months. Always an enjoyable time. Will come back next winter.

River Hills is a wonderful golf course with several dog leg holes and lots of water. It also has well placed sand traps and tight fairways to cause you trouble. The course is in great shape minus the greens which were recently aerated and spotty from a fungus. They mentioned this to us in advance and gave us a discount because of it. Overall, I really enjoyed the course.

Nicholas (Auburn, NY)

Course in good shape overall, fairways excellent, greens were Augusta fast almost rediculous fast. Nothing too memorable, wish I knew there were so many houses on course, thousand of houses , would have preferred something more secluded.

Alvaro (Guatemala, OT)

River hill, River Club, MBN KING COURSE, they worth it, Arcadian no good. bad maintence

Greg (Columbus, OH)

Fun course but the greens were in need of more attention.Narrow fairways that make you concentrate harder.

Kevin (Plain City, OH)

The course is beautiful and I'd like to play it again when it's not quite so cold and wet. I suspect later in the Spring the course is one of the nicest in Myrtle Beach.

Michael (Dorchester, ON)

Beautiful layout, prettiest course we played, most helpful pros and starters, friendly, will come back to play this course

Kevin (Chester, VA)

Awesome it...will play again.

Jane (Woodstock, GA)

Great course; we'll plan to play it again when we come back. We liked having pictures of the holes on a card.

Stewart (Wilmington, DE)

Very nice course, has slopes and narrow fairways similar to the TPC course. You need to hit your driver straight to be successful.

John (Rockville Centre, NY)

Very nice layout and well-kept.

Will (Chantilly, VA)

The course was in great condition; some of the best greens I have seen in Myrtle Beach. Everyone was very friendly and efficient. I will definitely play here again.

Bill (Whitaker, PA)

Nice course, lots of sand and water, would have made another selection if known

Eric (Taylorsville, NC)

Course was very nice and in good shape. Would have perferred for the greens to be quicker.

Dorne (Aiken, SC)

Beautiful course! Great layout. Great attention given by starters at tee time. Beautiful tees and fairways. Greens perfect. I would play again and bring friends. Thanks!

First time playing here, the staff was very friendly and accommodating. The golf course was in great shape from tee to green. Bunkers were very fair to play from. The greens were very receptive to approach shots yet when putting rather fast. My hats off to the golf course superintendent and their staff

Bill (Terryville, CT)

Greens were plugged. We were not told when booking on this web site. And also it was cart path only.. so very slow and they booked twosomes behind us who were locals. And just because you are old and retired doesn't deserve respect unless you give it. Nasty local retired people, may cross this off our list just for that reason.

James (Overland Park, KS)

The greens were excellent - speedy and true!

Course was in great shape. This was a great steal for the price. Would consider playing this again.

Neil (Myrtle Beach, SC)

This course was in great shape.Loved the greens. They were fast, putts rolled true.I was a little disappointed about some of the pin positions.several were about 2 from being illegal. This was a Tuesday-why make getting to the pin so hard.I think these green keepers are mad at someone.

John (Cosby, TN)

Tees were nice.

Micah (Morganton, NC)

Nice greens! Found the course very tight but some of that was me. Would like to play again and not hit the driver so much...score would improve by 5 or 6 strokes.

Christopher (Stoneville, NC)

I liked everything about my experience at River Hills Golf Club. Best greens I've putted on in years. Staff was friendly and the course was in excellent condition.

Pete (Hiawassee, GA)

Over 6 days, we played 10 rounds of golf at 10 different MB courses. Overall, this was our best experience. This is a beautiful challenging course and it is in excellent shape. Perfect greens and fairways with the tee boxes good. Only Hole ##1 is a bit iffy. Some elevation change here. The course ranger was active here so we were able to play in just under 4.5 hours. Would highly recommend and would return.

Max (Memphis, TN)

This course is simply amazing. Very difficult and in great condition. Players with no ball control may not enjoy this course but will appreciate its difficulty and will enjoy the beautiful holes. We will play this course again.

Gregory (Camp Lejeune, NC)

Fantastic, but very narrow course. Course was in phenominal shape for March, greens were absolutly perfect. If you are a high handicap or wild off the tee, bring some extra balls and expect to be a little frustrated. I'm a 5 handicap and only used my driver on 4 holes (hit thru FW on 2 of those) due to the narrow fairways and extreme doglegs. Staff was very curteous, range and practice green were large and well maintained. They offer free yardage books at the clubhouse, highly recommend you get one if you have never played the course, a GPS will be extremely helpful as well. Overall, I would make the 2 hour drive again and again to play this tough course. Have fun on ##17 (draw or cut around the tree will leave you in position for a long iron into the green in 2) and ##18 to close out your day, extra club or 2 is recommended to reach the green on your approach to ##18 (caution off the tee, don't go thru the FW).

Antony (Towson, MD)

Nice course. Narrow, but nice water features and risk versus rewards on several holes.

Dan (Charlotte, NC)

Course in great shape. starters easy going and attentive. Knowledgable, helpful proshop person. Wish I had purchased a yardage book for some hole playing tips before I started...or left my driver in the car

Daniel (Lac Des Ecorces, QC)

Hard to play

Brett (California, MD)

The course was great. Very challenging with the packed down bermuda rough near the water. It was very easy to lose a few balls. I loved the layout.

Ed (Laurel, MD)

Had a great time at course again.

Played course March 6th, 2013 and found it to be exceptional. Fairways and greens were superb given the time of the season. Played from white tees since the conditions were windy and found it to be a great test of golf. Many holes are deceptive and captures your attention as to how to play your shot both from the tees and approach shots. Numerous tee decks to suit all abilities. Must play course. Played many courses in Myrtle Beach over the years and only regret not finding this hidden gem sooner. Will be on my short list of regular courses to play here each year.
