Course designer Dan Maples built Pearl West Golf Course on the Calabash River to serve up stunning views and challenging golf. Golf Digest nominated this course as the “Best New Public Course” and has awarded it with a “4.5 Star” rating in its “Place to Play” guide, with new bentgrass greens keeping the game’s premier putting surface up to par. The fourth longest hole on the Myrtle Beach golf scene, Pearl’s signature hole is No. 16 - a 614-yard par 5, which most players say they are playing “well” if they have reached the green in three shots. It offers a scenic view of the Calabash that stretches down the right side of the hole, with frequent sightings of seagulls, alligators and other exotic wildlife that make it as beautiful as it is challenging.
Pearl West Golf Course has recently earned an overall rating of 7.5 from reviewers at the Myrtle Beach Golf Insider, with particular praise for its course maintenance, greens, course condition, and course design.
Having had 5-8 inches of rain the day before, I was amazed at how well the course conditions were.
(Liked the) greens
Good layout and all the holes are different.
The course is in great shape. Probably the best greens we have played on in the Myrtle Beach area. Super friendly staff just a great day!
Played the West Course and was just as pleased with the greens here as I was on the Pearl East Course. Can't beat the quality of either course at the Pearl right now. Two thumbs up!
This course is in excellent condition given the time of year and weather conditions. The greens were superb unlike many higher priced courses in the area. A definite must play.
I am amazed at how well this course looks AND plays! Wow!! What a great move to play this course. We will certainly be playing the Pearl East real soon!
Beautiful course! Best greens around! Helpful friendly staff a must play while in Myrtle.
Very nice course, well kept, helpful staff. I liked the Pearl courses the best ... very fun layout.
Pro shop staff borderline rude!
Not in good shape greens were thin and not a lot of grass on them I'll just a basic course nothing exciting
Excellent layout. Great staff.
What a surprise. best greens i played on in 2 years. real nice course.
All very helpful. Cold and windy but still had a good time
Well maintained, a locals course, best greens in the county.
Great course, very fair, excellent customer service.
The tee boxes were in rough shape. Liked the course layout.
Good course but not what I expected from reviews I have read. The green speeds were very slow. Very slow play. Had a 5.5-hour round. Waited on every shot. No ranger in sight to move play along. All in all, a good course to play.
My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the round. Course in great shape. I liked the 5 par fives. Wife thought it was lady-friendly.
The only problem I am having is getting to their clubhouse; the address supplied for GPS users does not come up in my Garmin, I would suggest to use coordinates (latitude and longitude).
It was like night and day, the difference between the Pearl West and East courses. Greens of the West were in good shape, on the East they were awful. Play the West, stay away from the East until the greens recover.
OK layout but fairways and greens need work. On about five greens a mower had a leak and these greens will soon be unplayable.
Great shape, bent greens real receptive.
Course in great shape as always.
Course was in good shape considering all the rain that came down the night before. Course is always fun to play regardless of pro shop staff.
Always enjoy playing this course. Nice layout, well maintained. Friendly starter, arrogant clubhouse personnel. Will definitely play again.
Course is in terrible shape, will not play again.
Signed up to play East course & arrived on 8-16-11 & found it has been closed all summer. West course was in terrible condition, greens bumpy and long grass in many sections.
Greens were very slow. Staff was very good, especially the folks at the bag drop. It started raining while we were in the pro shop and the bag drop folks got our bags under umbrellas. They did not have to do that and that left a great impression with us. The last 4 holes are very scenic, although course conditioning was not the best.
Course need more grooming, greens were way too slow, staff is very friendly.
Would never come back here. The tee boxes were non-existent and the fairways and greens were burnt out. Plus the grill room and beer cart shut down at 2:30.
Challenging, but fair layout. Back nine especially fun and tests your game. Staff very accommodating. Will return next year.
Very friendly staff. The West is a great layout in above-average shape. Greens are slow this time of year in order to protect them. Would play here again.
Played 5/15/11. Nice course layout but greens were slow and grainy.
Very nice course. Everything was great. The West seems newer and a little more forgiving. We'd play here again.
We got to play the West course and 9 holes at the East course, excellent experience. Very laid back ... we were not rushed or pushed. We had a relaxing, fun round of golf. Both courses were in great shape. Staff was very friendly. Beautiful finishing holes. Hard to beat the Pearl for value!!
Fairways were as good or better than fairways played at Barefoot courses. Overall course in fantastic condition.
Course was in great shape. Some of the pins on the back were placed very close to an edge and on a slope. This makes it very difficult for the average player and also slows down play.
Haven't played it for about 10 years. It is one of the better designs I get to play. I always enjoy the finishing 5-6 holes very challenging.
The course was in good shape although quite wet in some areas.
Pearl was a pleasant and challenging experience that was enjoyed by our group. Numerous holes provided a great challenge and yet were fair. A great 18th was icing on the cake, complete with gators.
Nice track! I rated greens 'good' cause they were froggy and I always rate a course by its greens. And, fairways/tees excellent for same reason. I know it was overseeding time of year. Would love to play these greens mid-summer!
See comments on Pearl East.
Same as above, this course is in North Carolina, a long drive from where I was staying. Terrific personnel at all points (clubhouse, starters, etc.) Challenging course and very fair. Greens need some TLC. Multiple divots need repair. Otherwise a very nice course and experience.
The course was very wet. Greens were slow and everything needed to be cut. The appearance and health of the turf was good, though.
Greens overrun with bermuda and ball marks everywhere. Very slow greens. Sand in traps was more like mud.
Nice layout, some challenging holes. Greens were extremely slow due to the weather conditions. Friendly staff and nice clubhouse. Would play again.
Excellent bang for the buck ... I will return next month. Great finishing holes.
The greens were very slow ... they definitely did not cut the greens yesterday and I hope they don't keep them that slow all the time. Nice course needs better maintenance.
It was hot and we were told there would be a club cart coming around, but we never saw it. Was a little hot, and no drinks.
Would not play again.
More open than its sister course Pearl East but every bit as beautiful and fun to play. Fairways are in great shape. Greens are crowned which can be intimidating but they keep the grass a little high to slow them down to help the average golfer. Defintely worth playing.
Great course. Loved the layout.
Great course ... very cold ... we want to come back and play it again.
The West course was a treat to play, and had a decent balance of sand traps, so I was able to stay out of the beach most of the time! Great burgers in the restaurant too.
Finishing hole was great! Course was very wet even though it rained heavily two days prior but not the day before (cart path only). Tee blocks were very uneven with sparse grass. Day we played greens were fertilized and watered, so putting was somewhat difficult. It is a good, challenging course, but disappointing because the grass in fairways and on tee blocks was very thin.
Excellent, beautiful course, Everything was perfect at the Pearl.
This course is a bear from the tips. One of the most entertaining courses I've ever played. Played No. 14 into the wind, took me a driver off the deck twice followed by the 3 wood of my life to get home in regulation. Great hole!!!
Fair for the price but would not go back. I could not open the attached file with the voucher but there was no problem at all, at the pro shop they called, and had it faxed.
Most interesting layout of the four courses we played on this trip with holes that provide unique challenges from shot-to-shot.
Course was in excellent condition. Very nice staff and great layout. Will definitely play again.
We played The Pearl West on May 21st, 2009. We had a wonderful day, got right on the course. I have never seen so much wildlife, it was beautiful (as was the gator). I will be back to play for sure. The course was challenging, yet had easy approach shots at times. Very balanced!
