Heather Glen Golf Course

    {hotel-image-caption}

Willard Byrd must have brought Scotland over to America with his most popular course design, Heather Glen Golf Links. Located in Little River, South Carolina, this 27-hole course layout is a tribute to the best Scottish and Irish links in golf. Golfers come back every year to enjoy this links style course with gorgeous oaks and pine trees, fresh water ponds, and a period-style traditional Scottish clubhouse. If that’s not spectacular enough, Heather Glen has earned several leading awards for its historic course. Golf Digest ranked Heather Glen as America’s #1 New Public Course (1987), and has been recognized among the Carolinas’ and country’s best golf courses throughout the years since. It has also been named to the Top 50 Public Courses in America in 1990, the Top 5 Courses in South Carolina in 1995 and awarded 4.5 stars in Golf Digest’s “Places to Play” readers’ choice poll in 2002.

Two signature holes that stand out at Heather Glen are #3 (White Nine) and #2 (Blue Nine). The 351-yard Par 4, #3, features a menacing pot bunker guarding the green; be prepared to know how to play your wedges on this hole. You will find Heather Glen decorated with these types of bunkers throughout your entire round. Similarly, as #3 presents bunker challenges, be prepared for more on the short Par 3, Blue Nine #2. Only at 160 yards, #2 stays true to the Scottish style links design and features deep pot bunkers and thick heather surrounding this small green.  Most golfers find that they can maneuver these signature holes easily if they chose the right club selection.  But fear not, Heather Glen has much more to offer than just challenging bunkers.  You will find the meandering streams, petite ponds, heather, and towering oaks and pines a vast distraction from the challenges of this Scottish style links course.

Tee Boxes & Greens are in good shape but the fairways were very thin & bare in some areas. Overall conditions were below average which is unusual for this course. Hopefully with spring approaching the course will improve. Staff is always very friendly here.

Overall condition of course was good but could have used some more clean up on the fairways & greens. Lots of small debris everywhere. Pace of play was very slow 4hrs 45mins. Starter did apologize for pace of play & tried to move our foursome to another nine after we mad the turn but it was backed up on all 3 nines. I appreciate the concern from the starter but I think there should be rangers on the course doing their job & keeping pace of play reasonable. I would recommend playing here but be prepared for a slow round during the busy seasons.

The staff was very helpful and allowed us to play Best Ball for the 5 of us which was not only great fun, but saved us wear and tear in the extreme heat!!

07/27/2016

Tee Boxes & Fairways are in great shape. Greens were recently aerified but are doing rather well. Staff was very accommodating except no beverage cart due to heat....

Nice layout, but greens were not in good shape.

07/13/2016

I love this course. The greens were a little beat-up with ball marks, but that's more on players than the course management. There are a bunch of interesting holes on this course and its a blast to play.

Ted

06/17/2016

Haven't played here in about 10 years. Course is in great shape. Lots of unique holes. Lots of rain the day before but carts were allowed on the fairways. Staff was very friendly & played 18 holes in less than 4 hours.

This course has gone very down hill. The greens were very spotty and it was difficult to find yardages just about on every hole.

The golf course is in great shape. Greens were excellent, staff was friendly, pace of play was good also. Ordered the fried bologna for lunch, which was really good. They also gave us, a great recommendation, for dinner, Clarks. Tony Haring, from Glens vacations, is excellent to deal with. The golf course is visually nice to look at. Holes 2 and 3 on the red course are some of my favorites. The facility, is 27 holes, all of them are a joy to play. The starters, keep everything running smoothly.

David

07/17/2015

Love this place but was a little disappointed with the greens this time around. The Red Course's greens were OK (not great) and the Blue were a mess. Everything else was excellent. I think the White was closed the day our group played it.

Tim

07/09/2015

We played on July 1st and the greens were really bad. They had told us they had punched the greens but one nine we played hadn't been punched and they were horrible. The second nine we played the greens had been punched and they were a lot better than the other nine. The tee boxes and fairways were great.

Been playing Heather Glen for over twenty years and have never been disappointed. The course was in good condition and the greens were receptive. Didn't see the ranger all day which allowed for a relaxed round of golf. Golfers of all skill levels will enjoy this course. Again, free lunch and replays thru the Glens Group make this a must on any golfers agenda.

Our annual golf getaway with 20 close friends has managed to enjoy Heather Glen on multiple occasions in the past. Our May 2013 outing was unfortunately delayed due to heavy rain but the staff in the pro-shop made sure our group was kept current on the changing conditions. They were flexible in offering some of our group rain checks as not everyone wanted to wait out the storm. The head greens keeper offered expert insight regarding the speed at which the course would drain and given the forecast was able to convince half our group to wait just a bit longer. We took that expert advice and were able to tee off and enjoy a another great day at Heather Glen as the course did indeed drain quickly. Cart paths were the rule of course but the overall condition of the course was excellent.

From the time we dropped off of our clubs, till the last putt was tapped in, this was a very pleasurable experience. Course was in excellent condition from the tee boxes, fairways, and greens. Played all 27 holes and found this course to be very fair and challenging. Beautiful scenery and enough elevation changes give you the opportunity to hit every club in your bag. Will definately recommend this course!!!!!

10/10/2012

Tough course if you miss the fairway. Starter advised to club up on most shots, it took me 4 holes to finally believe. Greens were respectable, about 9.5 stimp, and tough to read.

07/29/2012

Another great day. A wonderful selection of holes (would of loved to have played the white nine). Staff again was excellent. Can definitely see me returning to play the white next time.

Mark (South Park, PA)

07/16/2012

Nice track! Their sister track across the street, Glen Dornoch, might be more scenic but the hole layout is better at Heather Glen. The course is in great shape considering the lack of rain, which made the round easier since the creek beds were all dry. With pace of play, I only wish the grill would have their specials somewhat ready to speed the turn and have the lawn crew stop cutting right next to the tee box when you are about to hit. Really don't care about the noise as much as spraying a shot. Watch the squirrels! They WILL steal your food!

Jeff (Waynesboro, PA)

07/09/2012

Beautiful course, well maintained. Only hitch was I booked online the night before but our tee time was still double booked. They were still able to accommodate.

David (Williamsburg, VA)

Heather Glen was WONDERFUL. The course is in fabulous shape from tee to green. Could not have enjoyed it more. We will definitely play it again next time. Staff was great too.

Tom

04/03/2012

Played our practice round on 3/21 and our final round on 3/24. Nice course with a 'northeastern' feel. Bag guy was a bit gruff but all others from pro to starters & rangers were wonderful. Pretty course but seemed a bit 'tired' at times. Could use a very subtle tune up.

Gene

03/20/2012

Great course. Excellent shape. Nice, no houses on course. One of my favorites at the beach.

11/09/2011

Really nice 27-hole track. Lots of character, everyone in the group enjoyed it. Play the last nine as a scramble. Fun course. Good staff.

Jean-Paul (Valleyfield, Quebec)

11/09/2011

It was a new course for me. Like Possum Trot, I will return once in a while.

Michael (Annapolis, Md.)

Best of the bunch. The only one we will replay.

John (Clinton, Mass.)

11/07/2011

Nice layout.

Mark

11/05/2011

Sweety is gone! Great course, all 3 nines, like blue/white the best. Need a little faster greens.

Robert

11/04/2011

Average course. Based on comments I expected more. I will probably play it again next year but many better courses around.

Stephen (Meadville, Penn.)

11/03/2011

The last three holes on the white was visually stunning and challenging.

Charlie (Dunkirk, Md.)

10/31/2011

Would rate the course a little above average. Would like to see the staff a little more friendly.

Gary

10/28/2011

Ken (Lancaster, Penn.)

10/12/2011

Bob (Chicago, Ill.)

10/06/2011

Mainly rated as due to the rain previously.

Wade & Laura (New Cumberland, Penn.)

09/21/2011

Nice course and in great shape. Only downfall was the traps were unplayable. Lots of rain in area.

Kent (Winston Salem, N.C.)

09/20/2011

Enjoy this layout - well maintained.

Rob

08/25/2011

Well-maintained course. Course was a little soggy after a night of heavy rain but drained well. Good track to play and is always in good shape. Staff is friendly. Some of the tee boxes were a little roughed up but overall the course was in very good condition for late summer.

Tom (Canonsburg, Penn.)

07/06/2011

Very difficult course, unreal pot bunkers and berms gave this course a very 'English' feel. Tremendous starter was very helpful.

Paul (Murrells Inlet, S.C.)

07/02/2011

Slow Bent greens. Cut long due to heat.

Tom (Yorktown, Va.)

06/29/2011

WOW. First time back to MB in almost 15 yrs. and couldn't have picked a better course (for the money)! Course was in fantastic shape, staff was very friendly. Not very busy either ... 4 hrs. for the round which made it even more enjoyable. Will definitely play here again!

James (Greensboro, N.C.)

06/28/2011

Greens were a bit beaten. Tee boxes were a bit worn.

Pat (Glenburnie, Md.)

06/15/2011

Great course. In great shape, staff was friendly.

Peter (Fairfax Station, Va.)

06/01/2011

Heather Glen is always a treat to play. The greens are a bit slow, especially compared to the practice green which seemed much faster. Everybody had difficulty putting, although the greens are very smooth and roll pretty true. Putts tend to skid on the type of grass there, or maybe all of us are just terrible putters. Anyway, we enjoyed the course very much and will return in the future.

Gordon (Mount Airy, Md.)

05/28/2011

Tough course. Really, really pretty and extremely well groomed.

Sammy

05/26/2011

Everything was great.

Jeffrey (Cranston, R.I.)

05/23/2011

A perfect day of golf. Weather, course and staff.

MIchel (Casselman, Ontario)

05/17/2011

Nice course to play. Not to easy, not too hard.

Ray (Linthicum Heights, Md.)

05/14/2011

Nice course. Seemed to be understaffed at the bag drop with only 1 person doing everything. That being said, he did a great job.

Joel (Milwaukee, Wisc.)

05/06/2011

Nice course, great staff.

James (Dover, Del.)

04/23/2011

What can you say about the Glens courses. Always in great shape. Maybe the guy who loads the carts could use some help, he ran around like a crazy man, but he eventually got the job done.

Gary (Ridgewood, N.J.)s

04/22/2011

Course was in the best shape it's been in for years. It was always a pretty course with a nice layout. Great value for the greens fee and the group will be back next year, for perhaps two rounds incorporating all three nines.

Arnold (Athol, Mass.)

03/20/2011

Our group agreed this was the best overall place we played during the week. Fun course to play, great shape and friendly personnel.

Robert (Toronto, Ontario)

03/02/2011

Starters were cordial and helpful in every respect.

James (Denver, N.C.)

02/28/2011

Enjoyed it. Would recommend the Glen courses to everyone.

Jason (Blandon, Penn.)

02/22/2011

Had not played in about 10 years. Thought it was a lot better this time. Greens were good and staff was very friendly.

Ted (Slatington, Penn.)

11/29/2010

Always love the 27 hole layout, we play it every year we are there. Unfortunately the Red side was closed.

Ray (Covington, Ky.)

11/27/2010

Course condition for this time of year was good.

Brian

11/15/2010

Very nice course in very good condition.

Stuart (Massena, N.Y.)r

10/21/2010

One of my favorites of the area. The layout is very good. Greens were a little slow but smooth.

Bob (Westerville, Ohio)

10/17/2010

We very much enjoyed the three nines and the variety they exhibited.

Brent (Myrtle Beach, S.C.)

10/05/2010

A local golf director in Myrtle Beach. Played Heather Glen over 25 times and yesterday it was probably in the best shape I have seen it. Tee to green it was fantastic. Staff was amazing! Funny and pleasant. The reason I only gave the greens a 9 was the pace was a little slow for my taste, but that is done on purpose to give all level handicaps an even chance.

Rich (Toms River, N.J.)

09/26/2010

Good staff, 3 great 9s, all are different - I think Red is the weakest. Sweety, the squirrel @ the bag drop, has been there a long time and loves peanut crackers.

Arthur (East Greenwich, R.I.)

09/22/2010

Always a favorite among my group. The third 9 holes makes for an afternoon match without having to play the same holes we played in the AM. It played long due to no roll close to the greens.

Bill/Linda (Georgetown, Tex.)

05/05/2010

It was OK but would not play again.

Rick (Lawrenceville, N.J.)

04/28/2010

Best course (we played0 this week; we will be back.

Tass (Billerica, Mass.)

04/20/2010

Great shape; fun to play.

Bob (Sewell, N.J.)

04/19/2010

Course was in great shape. Play moved along nicely. Staff was very helpful.

Dave (Chicopee, Mass.)

04/15/2010

See you next year!

Archie (Averill Park, N.Y.)

04/06/2010

A great older course.

Karl (Green Bay, Wis.)

04/05/2010

Overall condition of club and course I felt has gone down since we played last year as well as staff friendliness.

J (Ramsey, N.J.)

04/01/2010

I enjoyed the whole experience. It's a fair course for a variety of skill levels.

James (Morristown, N.J.)

04/01/2010

A good first day.

Randy (Ingleside, Ontario)

03/30/2010

Not really fair to rate the golf course ... it had rained prior ... played here before and everything was great ... will come back.

Jim (Columbia, Md.)

03/26/2010

Favorite course.

Pete (Nelsonville, Ohio)

03/19/2010

Great course, also played Glen Dornoch and they were both in great shape.

Bernard (Howell, N.J.)

03/12/2010

Everything was fine.

Gary (Bowie, Md.)

03/08/2010

Frost impeded our start and getaway. Not course's fault.

Chris (Dedham, Mass.)

03/02/2010

Condition of the course was not that good. Probably would have played Glen Dornich if I knew the shape of the course.

Glenn (Monroe, Ga.)

02/24/2010

I would return to play again.

Soaked course again; however, I could see a lack of tee sign consistency as well as no towels in the carts especially after the heavy rains.

Course was very wet as result of the heavy rains.

This is one of our favorite courses. The Spectacle golf hole is firmly entrenched in our family lore and always makes for stories around the Sea Captain's table.

Heather Glen is still one of the greats. The course has matured, was very well maintained though November '09 was very wet. The trouble is mostly at the front of the greens, take plenty of club to get over it and you'll have a great day.

Hard to judge the course under the wet conditions. Loved the layout and really want to play in better conditions.

Best course in Myrtle Beach!

Great day, having 3 nines made the day better than playing the same 18 again. Good pace of play.

No complaints, love this course.

It had rained the day before and was very soggy. Otherwise excellent.

We played a 27 hole scramble here on Saturday. Our pace of play was very good because of the spacing of players, the course was in very good condition, and the challenges of the course were fair.

Michael (Greenville, S.C.)

Was just very wet and probably unplayable.

Scott (Barberton, Ohio)

Interesting course. Challenging but fair. On course staff very friendly and helpful.

Played the Red and White nines. The Blue nine needs one more week to recover from aerification. GREAT golf course. Players of all skill levels can play this course. Course was in great shape, and very enjoyable. Hard to beat for $57 at the beach!

Excellent course; a must-play. Every hole is a separate experience. I will play this course again.

Play Heather Glen on numerous occasions. One of my favorites. A must play.

Played Sept. 14, 2008: Was always on my list to play but will not ever play there again. Marshals were not on the ball. This course used to be on my list to play when staying @ Myrtle ...

Played Nov. 20, 2007: Heather Glen was tough and a nice change from most of the others being surrounded by homes.

Tom (Midlothian, Va.)

Played Nov. 10, 2007: It seemed Heather Glen overbooked their tee times, and we were 45 minutes late in teeing off our first day, eliminating the completion of our 18-hole round. Very disappointing with our 12-man group.

Tee Boxes & Greens are in good shape but the fairways were very thin & bare in some areas. Overall conditions were below average which is unusual for this course. Hopefully with spring approaching the course will improve. Staff is always very friendly here.
