Barefoot Resort - Love Course

    {hotel-image-caption}

    {hotel-image-caption}

Golf Digest named the Love Course at Barefoot Resort & Golf as one of “The Top 50 Courses of Myrtle Beach” (#1 in 2005) as well as “America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses” (#53 in 2007).  Golfweek recognized the Love Course in 2012 as “Top 15 Best You Can Play in SC” (#9), and Golf.com honored the Love Course in 2010 as “Top 20 Best Public Golf Courses in South Carolina” (#6).

The signature hole at the Barefoot Love Course is No. 4. This is a reachable par-4 that plays to only 294 yards from the longest tees, and 265 yards from the whites. The green is elevated and well guarded by bunkers on the front, left and right; however, any wayward shots tend to be punished on this hole. Just beyond the green lie the replicated plantation ruins, which are a signature element of the course.

A beautiful course and a good test of golf. The greens have suffered from all the storms but are still okay. I wish they had rolled the greens after spiking the greens, but with the small spikes it was okay, just a bit let down from previous years. My only complaint was the fact that the clubhouse added a 4th player to our threesome and told me We're booked up solid today. It was not the truth because nobody was behind us for at least 45 minutes. He was just helping someone get out but I saw twosomes playing. If he was truthful, I would not have complained but it was obviously not the truth.

Contrary to many of the reviews regarding the Barefoot Courses they were all in magnificent shape. The Love was the 2nd best kept of the three resort courses just behind Fazio. Bunkers had sharp edges and were a perfect consistency, fairways were like carpet and the greens were smooth and fast. They had just top-dressed a few days before but the sand had settled so that you could barely see it. If anything the fine layer of sand made the greens roll a little faster. Lots of memorable holes. Definitely check craigslist/Ebay for a Unaccompanied Member/Guest Pass. You can play for 1/3 the retail price.

I've played here (and at all of the other Barefoot courses) almost every year over the last 8 years or so...and generally it's amazing. Fantastic course design and layout. Always in great shape...tee boxes, fairways and greens are immaculate. Even the breakfast is awesome, whether it's the buffet or you just eat at the bar or take it with you on the course...so good. My one and only complaint is that they overbook - on Wednesdays in particular because of the reduced greens fees. It was so overbooked, in fact, that the cart staff and starter insisted on pairing our threesome with a single - on one of our carts!! I'm sorry, but I've been playing golf in Myrtle Beach and everywhere else in this country for 35 years and that's just totally unacceptable. I've played hundreds of rounds and this is only the third time that's happened. Either get more carts or stop booking so many people on your course that you have to resort to this absurdity!! A truly less than pleasant aspect to an otherwise fantastic round. Yes, it's a great course - the front 9 is especially fun to play, but be warned -- if you come here on a Wednesday as anything other than a foursome, be prepared to get stuck playing with someone else.

Normally in great shape. Not now the greens are struggling. They had just sanded the greens heavily. Hopefully in a few weeks better. Left after 9 holes

Mike

Greens were in terrible shape. Sand was put down the morning we played. Left after 9 holes.

I have played this course many times and it is usually in very good to excellent condition. That was not the case for the round today. Not all but a lot of the greens are in poor condition. Very disappointing since the greens were replaced a few years back and they were always very nice since the Champion Bermuda was put in. From what I saw today they have some serious green issues for a higher end priced golf course in NMB. I can't recommend the course.

Wonderful shape and design. The striping of the rye grass was beautiful and golf course condition as close to perfect as one could expect in December. My favorite design of the 4 Barefoot courses.

10/27/2015

Having played the Dye and Fazio courses on previous trips I would rate the Love course right up there with them. Wide landing areas reward good tee shots while the approach shots need to be on target as the greens are protected with bunkers or water or both. The entire course was in magnificent condition and the weather just enhanced the experience. The staff in the pro shop were very welcoming and the clubhouse adds to the aura of the Barefoot experience. The only downside to the day was the starter - he just gave us scorecards and pointed to us as to where to go for the first tee. He wasn't interested in giving us any info and instead was more interested in the large group behind us as he obviously sniffed a higher tip!!! Apart from this we had a very enjoyable day!

We really looked forward playing the course because of all the positive reviews we read. When arriving there our first impression was that it's a typical resort course since we felt being a little rushed. The course layout is ok but nothing compared to e.g. the Legends courses, Wild Wing Avocet, TPC, Long Bay or Rivers Edge. The fairways were of good quality as well as the tee-boxes. However, the greens were in bad shape with many spots w/o grass. I would recommend to play that course since there's way better ones in the area for a better deal.

We stay at the Barefoot condos so it is appropriate that we play one of their courses. Took advantage of the Wednesday discount rate. Disappointed in the conditions this year. A lot of green paint on the fairways. Is this a way to reduce maintenance costs? Will have to reconsider next year if this continues.

VERY FAIR COURSE, CONDITION WAS EXCELLENT. GREENS FAST BUT REASONABLE. LOTS OF GOLFERS FOR ALL 3 COURSES CAUSED SOME CONFUSION WITH STARTER. ONCE ON COURSE, MOVED ALONG WITH NO PROBLEM. ONLY 3HRS 50 MINUTES NEEDED TO COMPLETE ROUND.

Excellent golf experience. The hole with the old ruins was amazing and the photo op was worth booking the course. Love's design was both challenging and fair and gave you a good opportunity to make some decisions on what sort of shot to hit. I loved the Love. I will be back to Barefoot for the other 3 courses.

Clubhouse is large, staff are professional and attentive, grill serves good food, and you can tell its a class act. Only complaint is the starting area. With three courses and tons of golfers, it can seem like mass chaos from morning thru afternoon. We got off on time and pace was mostly fine, but I'm still not sure how they did it. The Love course is good. From tee to green the course was in nice shape. Typical links course, very open with strategically placed bunkers for your pleasure. You don't come back to the clubhouse or even a grill shack after 9 which was disappointing and the beverage cart appeared infrequently which was surprising considering how packed the course was. Same thing for rangers.... few and far between. I love the Barefoot courses, but they lose some of the glamour and pleasure with the sheer volume of people they push true. Also, maybe it was the season, but the food services was sit down. Good food, but would have been happier with a hot dog or sandwich and hit the range/putting green. Something quick and simple didn't seem to be an option.

We have finished and stayed at Barefoot the last few years with extra night free it allows us to play 27 and go back and shower before we begrudgingly leave until next year. We have played all except DYE, but that will be on the list next year! All course are in immaculate condition and greens are fabulous!! One other comment that should be made, please change the longest tees from silver to some other color, when the sun hits them in morning they and white look just the same!!

07/01/2013

The course was in decent shape except that they lied about the condition after they had top dressed the greens and when asked lied and I booked the round. I was paired up with 3 other players and we played the tips and under the rules of golf. I would have enjoyed the course more from the middle tees. I didn't like the forced carries but the course is very scenic and the staff did an OK job. I would recommend this course but please check about the greens before you play.

Mark

05/30/2013

Great course,wide fairways, firm fastgreens

Art (Wilmington, DE)

05/14/2013

The new in 2012 champion greens were firm and fast, even after the rain. The course is fairly traditional with some trees, little water, wide fairways and some Pinehurst ##2 style crowned greens. On many holes, you have alternate options off the tee, to play wide or to challenge hazards/bunkers. The wide side plays longer but often provides a better angle to the undulating greens. With the options off the tee, Love is fun to play. There are fake ruins between holes 4 + 6. The main ruins hole (##4) is drivable, but plays longer than it looks. Don't expect to bounce it on, because it is uphill and the fairway slopes to the bunkers.

Robert (Woodhaven, MI)

05/14/2013

Paul

05/14/2013

The Love course is in great shape. I pick a spot on the tee in front of my ball for alignment, these tees are so good it's sometimes hard to find a spot that is imperfect. Really nice course that is fun to play, One of the best on the Grand Strand. I pay more to play here than I usually pay on the strand but it is well worth it. The course and facility delivers.

Louis (Hicksville, NY)

05/07/2013

Great service. Top notch facility. The layout was nicely countoured, tough but fair. The GPS in the carts really helped with the carry distances over the hazzards.

Bruce (Lonetree, CO)

04/22/2013

Great layout and good condition compared to the Fazio course.

Dee (Severn, MD)

04/01/2013

Barefoot Landing is always in excellent shape. Fairways and greens were in excellent shape, but the rough was dormant and slick. Stay in the fairway! The bunkers on this course are also strategically placed for your tee shots and are difficult to play out of. Another tough weather day with cold temperatures (mid 40's) and windy (gusts to 30 mph). Hole ##4 has the ruins on it and adds to the experience.

Raymond (Cedarburg, WI)

03/25/2013

Best course we played this trip. Will play it again next year

Leroy (Cedarburg, WI)

03/25/2013

Great experience, good value for the cost. We will return.

03/20/2013

Another premium course with dormant rough and chipping grass. Nice layout but I Would never return in the MB off season. Awesome pace of play...we cruised through.

Glenn

03/11/2013

Try and play a Barefoot course each time I visit MB and Love was the choice this year. MY favorite for sure. Very windy day made playing conditions difficult but course was in great shape

Chad (Sandy Risge, NC)

03/08/2013

Same as the other comments about the greens.

Roger (Shohola, PA)

03/04/2013

Staff was very professional, we were able to really feel what a country club atmosphere is like. magnificent clubhouse. only bad thing was it appeared that the course was overbooked that day. or the groups were not spaced apart enough.. at times we had 3 groups on every hole. sort of wondered where the ranger was and why he wasnt doing his job.. other than that, really enjoyed the course, the layout, and conditions.

Timothy

01/31/2013

We played on 1/30/13 and enjoyed everything about this course, except the 20-30 mph winds that blew that day. The course is in excellent shape tee to green. The staff were very friendly and helpful. This course plays easier than the Fazio but is still a challenging layout. A number of risk reward tee shots on the Love course. I will look forward to playing it again.

William

01/23/2013

Have played it several times and really like the overall layout. Probably my favorite of the Barefoot courses. The stone relics give it a nice touch.

Jeremy (Lakeview, OH)

05/02/2012

Awesome course, one of my favorites in Myrtle, the best conditioning of any I played this year.

Michael (Methuen, MA)

05/01/2012

A very nice track ... Will be added to ALL future golf trips to the Grand Strand. Players need to do a better job of fixing ball marks on the greens. My ball nestled into two during my round.

Al (Arnold, MD)

04/28/2012

Beautiful course. Loved the ruins with the greens around them.

Rick (La Plata, MD)

04/28/2012

It's going to be a long time before I play this course again, but it's just because it's too challenging for me. This is a great course for the above average golfer. I was hitting the ball great all day, and still lost 2 balls per hole.

Doug (N. Reading, MA)

04/25/2012

Very good.

Geoff (Abington, PA)

04/24/2012

Great condition!!! Greens were hard and fast, much better that the courses in the north. Great experience, but very difficult.

03/10/2012

Stunning course. Barefoot does it right and is in great condition. We found Love to be the best of the big four. Better layout and better greens.

Mike (Pittsburgh, Penn.)

02/27/2012

The layout and course design were excellent. Some of the fairways were a bit thin.

Randy (Coraopolis, Penn.)

02/27/2012

Course is very playable. Cart path only due to heavy rains the only negative.

Course was challenging. Course was in great shape.

Bob

11/07/2011

Played 11/3 and the course was great! One of the best in Myrtle Beach.

Scotty (Denver, N.C.)

11/07/2011

Even though the wind was blowing 30 mph, we enjoyed playing such a fine course. The only problem was playing behind a group that held us up most of the round. At least two holes were open in front if them.

Steve (Carbonear, Newfoundland)

10/25/2011

Not as impressive as normal. We were a little dissatisfied.

Michael (Adamstown, Md.)

10/16/2011

Sand in bunkers is horrible.

John (Wakefield, Mass.)

10/12/2011

Always a great course to play!

Patrick (Sherbrooke, Quebec)

10/03/2011

This golf course was as we anticipated, very good. We liked the design of the course. Having to play the course on cart path only due to wet conditions made the game more difficult, as we needed to bring many clubs to the ball. On dry conditions, this course would be fantastic.

Kent (Winston Salem, N.C.)

09/20/2011

Great complex and course.

William (Kenilworth, N.J.)

08/19/2011

Great condition for the month of August.

Scupper

08/16/2011

Greens were very soft with a lot of unfixed ball marks, but overall OK. Nice layout, fun course. Look forward to playing again.

Robert (Orange, Conn.)

07/27/2011

Have played Love course last year, condition better this year despite drought conditions.

Scott (Bremerton, Wash.)

07/12/2011

Absolutely loved the greens, great condition!

Tom

07/07/2011

The course was in petty good shape despite the lack of rain for the area. The greens rolled fast and where the ball was aimed. The starter and staff were pleasant and around and checked on our status often. The pro shop staff and grill staff were attentive and helpful.

Daniel (Kirkland, Quebec)

06/01/2011

Everything was great. Thanks for everything and will play the Fazio on our return if everything is repaired.

Jerott (Cedar Hills, Utah)

05/10/2011

Our foursome received no help from staff in unloading our bags from the mini-van. After our clubs were on the carts, we weren't allowed to drive down to the putting green, had to walk which was about 100 yards away. Then walked back to our carts and was allowed to first tee. Course was in great condition. Fairways mowed nice, and greens were very smooth and responsive to well-struck approach shots. GPS in the carts was a bonus.

James (Crown Point, Ind.)

04/26/2011

Very hard course; fairways run toward the water, you are penalized for some good shots.

Dan (Arvada, Colo.)

04/25/2011

Love Course was nice, was extremely windy the day we played but nice course.

Harvin (Midland, Tex.)

04/23/2011

Nice.

Gavin (Scarborough, Ontario)

04/19/2011

Had one course marshal tell us we were 5 min. behind schedule - the same place we had started, not to mention there was a full hole open behind us.

Mike (Carpentersville, Ill.)

04/09/2011

Overall good.

Tim (Endicott, N.Y.)

03/17/2011

Great time, thank you!

Robert (Toronto, Ontario)

03/02/2011

Class A facility in every respect.

Jason (Blandon, Penn.)

02/22/2011

Played last weekend. Great layout. Lots of fun holes. Greens were very good. Would play again.

Sean (Ladson, S.C.)

02/15/2011

Course and greens were in great shape. The only complaint was the 30 mph wind gusts that made conditions difficult. Other than that we had a great time as usual!

Fred (Scotch Plains, N.J.)

11/24/2010

Favorite course in MB! Norman course is not here for review so I will say here that it is an embarrassment and we should have been warned about the condition. Where there was grass on the greens it was as long as the fairways!

Mike (Chicago, Ill.)

10/29/2010

Weeds sedge are taking over the area around the greens and some fairways.

Dannie (Maidstone, Ontario)

10/19/2010

Barefoot Love was in good shape and the greens were the best of the Barefoot courses.

Gary (Mansfield, Mass.)

07/06/2010

Very nice course. Professional staff, courteous. Ranger was terrific in apologizing for a sprinker that was on in error. Greens were good although they had been aerated recently you could tell. Great layout ... thoroughly enjoyed.

Eric (West Branch, Mich.)

06/09/2010

This was the most difficult course out of the four courses. I really ejoyed everything about it.

Dave (Texas)

06/08/2010

We were warned at the start that the greens had been aerated earlier in the week, but it definitely lessened our playing experience. Worst greens we faced all week. Cost me at least 3 shots off my score. Overall the staff was great but very hasty with us at the start since they were starting for 3 courses, could be better with someone dedicated to our course.

Greg (Glace Bay, Nova Scotia)

05/05/2010

It was a great course.

Bill/Linda (Georgetown, Tex.)

05/05/2010

The Love course was our favorite for the week. It was amazing and in fact, on our return trip we'd like to play all four courses!

Joe (Middletown, N.J.)

04/29/2010

Shot placement made it interesting and challenging.

Darren (Edmonton, Alberta)

04/20/2010

Excellent practice range.

Matt (Grand Island, N.Y.)

04/18/2010

Outstanding course in great shape. One of the best in the area. Everything about Barefoot Resort is top shelf.

Azlan (Grimsby, Ontario)

04/06/2010

Course is in great shape. Several challenging holes. Make sure you hold your breath going under the tunnel ...

Neil (Rougemont, N.C.)

04/01/2010

Excellent.

Paul (St. Paul, Minn.)

03/03/2010

Enjoyed the course a lot. Conditions just good since we were in the winter and can't expect perfect conditions.

Robert (Medford, N.J.)

02/26/2010

Least exciting of the six courses we played (including Barefoot Dye, Grande Dunes, Dunes Club and Tidewater).

Judson (Raleigh, N.C.)

01/07/2010

Excellent course.

David (Germantown, Wis.)

12/08/2009

We were the only group on the course, they had aerated the week before. They offered us any other course there, class act, we just really wanted to play that one. AWESOME time!

Jim

11/03/2009

It was very nice and yes, we would play it again.

Richard (Chatham, N.J.)

10/28/2009

It would have been even better if you could have stopped the rain!

Karen (Highland, Mich.)

10/27/2009

enjoyed the course very much. Great for anygolfer, high hadicap or low hadicap.

Bruce (Falls Church, Va.)

10/24/2009

Best course I have played; would play again.

Jean (Joliette, Quebec)

10/13/2009

The fairway is not green ...

Tim (Eureka, Mo.)

09/18/2009

We have played Barefoot before & loved it.

Ken (Macon, Ga.)

09/01/2009

The love course is one of my favorite courses to play in MB, along with the TPC. My favorite aspect is the greens, their contours and condition.

John

08/27/2009

Greens were slow but otherwise we liked the course.

Greg (Enon, Ohio)

07/18/2009

Good enough to bring me back in future years.

On Barefoot – Dye:

We played the back tees which probably was a mistake for me. My buddy scored an 82 from back there, so I played it with him. Your starter needs to keep his opinion of who should play back there to himself (Ace). If I want to spend my money, not slow anyone down, and torture myself, that should not be discouraged by anyone on your staff.

On Barefoot – Fazio:

Super course and experience. Your staff at the carts do a great job of juggling three courses.

On Barefoot – Norman:

Nice course to end the trip on. Go home with decent scores.

On MB National – King’s North:

My favorite course in Myrtle Beach. Beautifully maintained while providing various shots and decisions.

On Long Bay Club:

Love the course. Played it six times now and will always make it part of my golf trips.

Anthony (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.)

06/11/2009

very nice experience and would come back

Played Nov. 22, 2008: Fantastic course. One of our favorites anywhere in the world! Excellent layout and condition. Make it a priority to play it if you can.

Played Sept. 20, 2008: I replayed the Love course in the afternoon (9/20) and on the cart paths in many locations there was dog poop present. This is very disgusting and the owners of the dogs should take responsibility. I would expect the course to maintain a clean presence for the type of course it is.

Played March 1, 2008: Nice layout, lady friendly. Will have to play it again when everything is greener.
